Doom - The Dark Ages (2025)

mmm never really got into or played the doom games, not since the pixel days, do have doom 2016 in my steam library but not played it, which of the new games would you say is the best?

And easiest hahahaha

Hard to tell, gamepass would make up a huge portion of players.

It’s become one of my favourites, it has some really epic moments.

I’ve been looking around maps still missed few secrets etc but they don’t actually add much not even lore so not an incentive to be arsed getting them really

It does getter better and better as the game progresses. I like how you really feel the weight and power of doom guy in this one.

Yeah is quite funny if you drop from a high ledge you can land with force and squish demons even if they’re not close ha

Unless my memory mistakes me though doom 2016 and Eternal had a rocking sound track in the fights I’m not really getting that from this

If you haven't already turn up the music, it's too low at default imo. The music might need tweaking to help it through the chaos. Listen to the soundtrack in isolation and you'll soon change your mind if you think it's lackluster.

Yeah it's crazy how the audio gives you that feeling of power and weight as you move about and jumping down from high is crazy. I'm playing this one on my TV with Atmos and the bass really adds to the effect.

You think the built in TV speakers sound any good?

I'd give my LG C9 sound quality 2/10.

It reminds me of Quake 3's sound track - there is a generic ambience feel to it which doesn't pull you in like the earlier games. You'd be hard pressed to create something like 2016 and Eternal's sound track using AI but Dark Ages you could slip AI generated tracks in there and people probably wouldn't be the wiser.

Tbf I haven't played Eternal for a couple of years but yeah you may be right. I'm about 60% through the game and there are definitely certain parts where the soundtrack was driving me to play more aggressively and so I think it varies in terms of impact depending on where you are in the game.

The recent Doom games in order imo
Doom 2016 > Eternal > Dark Ages

2016 is most like the original Doom's of the recent three

Never got around to completing the 2016 one cos I got bored about half way through.
I found it too repetitive and decided that I couldn't be bothered to carry on, so played something else instead
 
I was forced into buying it and I'm not really feeling it. It just doesn't feel like Doom to me. Maybe I've been too tired the last couple of days but I die too quickly and find myself bored with it. I am playing it on a harder level but don't want to make it easy for myself. 1 hit wipes out all your health and armour and another and you're dead. The game play doesn't feel right.

Seen a few reviews, but just doesn't really look like a proper doom game to me. Just can't bring myself to buy it, not at £50 anyway. Maybe when it's £20 in a few months time.

I liked the 2016 doom, actually finished that one. Gave up on eternal, just didn't enjoy the gameplay mechanics. Not getting fooled again.

i would just play them in release order, there are several difficulty modes so i would not worry about that.

i prefer eternal over 2016, i have not played dark ages yet
 
The overall gun play is a bit too similar each level but new guns bring enough variety. Some levels throw you into completely different gameplay so I would say to people stick with it.

About halfway so far, I’m just struggling to decide graphically wise over quality and performance. I want both really but I can tell when in quality mode the slight lag in movement.
 
Finished it last night - the ending went on too long, I got a bit sick of the repeating essentially the same boss fight. It was OK, I enjoyed it in short bursts but I'm playing on gamepass so it hasn't cost me anything. As I said earlier in this thread, I'd be a bit disappointed if I'd paid full price for it. It's already uninstalled.

For someone like myself who absolutely adores the original DOOMs. And still play them to this day with the thousands of mods/maps that are out there. I have every DOOM up until this latest one and they have become pretty stale.
I don't even think I will get this latest one even if it was free...
