Doom to use async compute

by narrowing down your choices to the point that you would have no choice left but to go to their next OS, if thats not forcing, i dont know what it.
they owe me my money i spent on my OS, they owe me the promise that the OS is supposed to take full advantage of my hardware, not to have features available on my hardware for years not being able to take advantage of, then when it's possible they shift it to be exclusively on their new OS, and DENY it for windows 7
and ofc all of this will start again, in few months if they consider win10 migration has succeeded, they will stop on purpose any evolution, and start shifting things to their new OS whatever they may call it, some might say thats business, but it's really not, they dont have to deny stuff for current OS just to sell the next OS, thats a conscient choice they make, when it's possible to have it on both, just because they have no respect for you as a user, they know you will bend over and take, they make sure you have no other choice.

But you didn't HAVE TO buy it. You could stay with Windows 7/8 or move to Linux. You only need to move if you WANT the features they offer in their new product. It seems quite normal for newer versions of software to include features the older version didn't.
If you're saying the software isn't fit for purpose or there was false advertising then I'm sure there are legal avenues you can pursue.

Does Linux do all the things you're so angry that Win10 doesn't do? If not why aren't you angry with all the Linux distributors? If it does, why not use it instead?

Remember it's been said many a time that Microsoft hates PC gaming, so there must be better alternatives right? Nobody's complaining that 'Linux' hates PC gaming so they must do it better.

Tbh Microsoft has started force updating previous Windows version.
Happened to two my friends.

You'll have to move to Windows 10 at some point. Better to get use to it now before it's forced upon all. Wins 7 & 8.1 only have support until 2018. Windows 10 ain't that bad. I'm really like it so far. Just need to change and turn off a few things in settings

Couple of my work colleagues complained about this recently - one simply left the PC on for a few hours while they played on their PS4, one had a message box saying it would update to Windows 10 in an hour unless they clicked cancel (they didn't, they just minimised it and an hour later it happened - d'oh!). I'm runnning Windows 7 on my HTPC that is on 24/7 and that hasn't shown any sign of being forced to update.

I am wondering if the issue is they've clicked the boxes at some point in the past year to reserve a copy of Windows 10 for that machine and the update to do so has now moved from Optional to Recommended in the Windows Update settings in view of the free update finishing in July? This would explain why they've now been upgraded and I haven't as I've never clicked to reserve Windows 10 on that machine as it runs Windows Media Centre, which isn't available on Win10.

I feel we may be digressing from the subject of Async Compute in Doom here. :D Looking forward to the game though. Somehow I've never managed to get hold of a Doom game within 3 years of it's release so looking forward to seeing one when it's at the cutting edge for a change.

thats the way i looked at it, going to happen sometime so get on it now like ripping a bandage off, the faster you do the less painful it is

It's probably something like that, Windows 10 offers you the opportunity to downgrade back to Win 7 if you do not like it, I think the conditions are you have three months in which to choose the downgrade option and if you do opt to downgrade you won't be able to upgrade again for free.
That's roughly right, I read it when I upgraded but haven't thought about it since as I like Win 10 and what I dislike about it can be changed with some settings tweaks.

Happened to my dad right before my eyes - don't know if he ignored any warnings as he is the type to just skip over stuff like that - he was finishing up some documents on the PC that he needed early the next morning and I stopped by to ask him something - few minutes later we became aware his PC was 15% into upgrading to Windows 10 (it probably saw it as a "good" time to auto apply updates as he usually isn't on the PC that late). He wasn't best pleased as he couldn't finish what he was working on until it had done upgrading and he was already pushed for time.

Really bad form by MS.

yes i will have to move to a next OS at some point, but it's not better if i just go along with the flow, because when i do that, i just validate the way they treat PC users, i would rather on my own way help fragment their install base, so that everytime they do the same, they end up with the same issue, i gotta hand it to microsoft, the free upgrade was the biggest bait to date, and the vast majority here wouldn't have upgraded this early if it wasnt for the freebie, and with the current install base, win10 is a monumental failure, because i am pretty sure their prediction was x2 or x3 times higher than this, the reason why they look to pushy with the auto update and non stop nagging.
anyway i will eventualy get win10 in 2 years, or skip it for the next one, who knows, or maybe vulkan takes off, but one thing is sure, i am happy to be the stubborn one staying on my win7, you know the funny part, if dx12 was on win7, i probably would have upgrdaed to 10 by now

I thought about skipping it as well. I was really happy with Wins 8.1, just thought I would try something new and to my surprise Wins 10 isn't have bad. Runs much faster as well. DX12 was half the reason I moved. For the first 10 mins of Installing Windows 10 I hated it, but after playing with it for a while longer it really grew on me.

MS has also said there might not be Wins 11? I have no idea what they'll do then? Maybe a new naming scheme, Who knows? So we could be seeing windows 10 here to stay for years to come?

I don't imagine it bothers MS one little bit if the odd person doesn't upgrade. They've likely got a huge number of businesses that won't be upgrading either because of the size of the task or because of how new Win10 is. They'll no doubt wait a while, probably until Microsoft withdraw support. So the userbase will be split, after that MS don't care as it's out of support so they can ignore it. I've got 2 PCs still running XP and Microsoft haven't sent me any angry letters complaining about it and how I'm splitting the userbase.
I'd have thought MS would be more than happy with a current low install base as it means people aren't using the free upgrade, instead if they do upgrade later they'll have to pay for it, mean more money for MS.

I'm always reluctant to upgrade my OS too. I was happy with Windows 2000 and was reluctant to upgrade to XP. I eventually did has hardware stopped supporting the older Windows versions. I think Nvidia drivers started requiring Windows XP, so I upgraded (or maybe it was motherboard drivers). Then Microsoft released Vista and made DX10 an exclusive, I skipped Vista and so missed out on DX10. My choice. I got Win7 when I got a new PC but didn't want to move on from Win XP. Then came Win8 and DX11.3. I didn't want Win8 so I chose not to get it and so went without DX11.3 too. One of my PCs is running Win10 and I'll probably move the others over eventually too while it's still free. But that's my choice. I feel no more forced now than I did with Vista or Win8. If you see DX12 as a carrot you want then that's on you, it's your choice and you have the option of moving to Win10 or not. Microsoft have been doing this New Windows, new DirectX thing for a while so it can't have been a surprise and the dilemma isn't anything new. You've had plenty of time to jump off of the Microsoft Windows train if you didn't like it.

But as someone said, this is off-topic...

So, new Doom will use a new feature of DX12, good. I'm guessing they were added so people could use them...

thats BS, they spinoff something to make you think that the only way to go from now on is win10, but if you spend 5 minutes thinking about it you will find that it's BS, lets see their options.
only windows 10, is it going to be a life long OS ? ofc not, so at some point they will introduce something new to charge you for it, what's the difference if it's called win11 or win10.7 ? the fundamentals will remain, a new version holding gaming hostage with DX12.5/13/15, forcing you to move to it whil denying for the soon to be replaced win10, so in reality NOTHING changed from the last decade, but the wording they present it to you with.
whatelse can they do ? DLC kinda thing? maybe, then ppl will have to buy original OS + the DLC, thing that wouldnt work for more than 1 DLC, because accumulating DLCs+OS will not sit right with ppl who need to get 2-3dlc, so the most likely outcome, win10 will be free, and only charged dlc, and even then, they cannot accumualte much and will only pay for the last DLC, and early adopters will feel screwed.
feel free to correct me if im wrong.

They seemed to be betting on making their money from the ecosystem - apps and additional services - if that doesn't pan out then there may end up being a commercial replacement for Windows 10 down the line but the ideal at the moment is it just becomes the Windows platform and continuously updated like Android.

Unfortunately I can't see that being a success because they've lost touch with the wider userbase and you can't force a one size fits all approach with an OS and hold a significant majority share of the users and likewise the same ideology is being applied to the app system, etc. and it simply doesn't work - they'll end up pushing people on the fringes towards Apple who do that kind of thing better once their reasons for staying with Windows are no longer valid and on the other side pushing people towards Linux and so on and while the odd person holding out might be insignificant over time it will be a slow declining trend and they'll end up making Windows 11 to try and reverse it.

That isn't to say Windows 10 doesn't have some good features but it is being constrained from what it could be by closed minded and limited vision in the decision making.

I am sad that Doom isn't pushing graphics anymore, it looks like Rage and has lame "press x to win" canned animations. I don't care what new features it's using if it looks like a 5 year old game. The 60fps limit that goes Benny Hill when unlocked is also ridiculous, why is that still there. All evidence points to it being a token engine upgrade.

If this is using ID tech engine it won't be DirectX12. Seeing has its using async compute tells me this the first Vulkan API game?

Orangey if the alpha was anything to go by then this was really nice looking game.
Graphics also don't mean everything, what this type of game has to get spot on is its fast paced over the top shooting and I can safely say they nailed it from what I played.
