Dota client leaked, epsiode 3 bits and bobs found

that's what you get for delaying games so long and not releasing any info.

Valve has no duty to the public to release a product at a given time or release information about it prematurely. They are a company - they do what they think will maximise their profit. Stealing IP from an innocent company worth millions of pounds and distributing it to the public is wrong no matter

I've just realised I didn't have a ******* CLUE what was going on in episode 2.

-- complete spoilers for episode 2 --

From what I recall:

1. You emerge from the train wreck at the end of ep 1, to see that the citadel is destroyed and is spewing out masses of energy. You communicate with Dr Kleiner and co who say they have a plan to close the portal, but they need the data Alyx took from the citadel (in ep 1). So you head to white forest.

2. Alyx gets dry-bummed by a hunter, but luckily a Vortigaunt finds her before she actually dies. To save the damsel in distress you head into the antlion caves, where you meet Adam Baldwin, and he and his buddy help you fight off a mass of antlions. You then head into the antlion nest to retrieve some magic potion to make Alyx better. While the Vortigaunts are stoned and distracted, G-man makes an appearance with a cryptic message for Alyx's father.

3. You set off for white forest again. The Vortigaunt knows of humans with a car, so you head towards their camp. Of course, they're all dead when you arrive, but you can see the car anyway. Only a mass of zombies and a wobbly bridge separate you, so no problem.

4. You head off in the car and come across another communication station. You manage to get the power on, but also get raped by hunters and the combine track your signal. So lose-lose really. A bit further down the road you make another stop and almost get head-sucked by an advisor. Plus you get a helicopter on your tail. Another bad move...

5. You lead the chopper to a rebel base, where you take it down by launching its own grenades back at it. Afterwards you meet up with (another) Adam Baldwin, and he shows you the radar he added to your car. So off you go again. After taking down an autogun and surviving a massive combine ambush, you meet up with dog outside white forest, who is going mano-a-mano with a strider.

6. Inside white forest you find out that the combine is approaching with striders, and, of course, that you are expected to hold them off. After fending off a sneak combine infiltration you head down to see Eli, who quickly signs his own death warrant by starting to tell you about the G-man and promising to "finish the conversation later".

7. As the striders approach you head back to your car, where Adam Baldwin shows you the sensors and grenade rack he added to your car. Then you drive it out towards a saw mill, where Adam Baldwin explains that striders are coming. The striders come, you beat them back by launching sticky bombs at them. You return victorious, and a thousand Adam Baldwins cry out with joy as you drive past.

8. The rocket is launched and the portal is closed. For two minutes, all is good. But this is the second part of a trilogy - no place for a happy ending. The required dose of pain and misery is dealt by a couple advisors who float in and munch on Eli's grey matter. Dog comes to the rescue moments too late, and we fade out to the sobbing of Alyx.

I didn't think the Half Life 2 story was that complicated. Then again, I have played it 8 times, and Episodes 4/5 times each, so that might help!

So this is evidence that Episode 3 is still using the Source engine... that's incredibly lame. For all the talk of how modular or adaptable it may be, it's still a dated and ancient engine that hasn't really made any impressive visuals.

The thing is all the Episodes were supposed to come out on Source, it's just that the original schedule (new episode every 9 months, meaning EP3 was due late 2007) seems to have fallen by the wayside. I can't see any reason why Valve would need to abandon Source for EP3, it is still being actively developed for their other franchises (Portal, L4D, TF2 etc) and then focus on a new engine for HL3.

Who's to say it won't be updated?

The very post you quoted says the engine would be updated, but there's only so much you can do with an engine from 2002 (It's nearly ten years old now).

Just look at Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2. They're as far as you can go with Source now, and they're still not that great.

Thing is, the whole episodic thing is a complete farce, incremental additions every 2-3 years? Valve should be working on an actual fully fledged Half Life 3 right now, and with the time they've had, it's absolutely ridiculous that all we're getting is another episode on the same engine. I can guarantee you it won't look that much better than Episode 2.

You have to remember that it's inevitably going to be released for 360 and PS3 as well, so really, don't expect a jump in graphics.

Sorry to bump, but when I said update I mean the same kind of updates they did to the engine from the original quake engine to this day. Source is modular too with more room for improvements, heck they could have something completely newer out.

Absolutely, I never suggested there would be a big graphical improvement, and nor should we expect one from some episodic content released on the same engine. The focus must surely be on continuing the storyline rather than trying to create some sort of tech showcase, that can wait for HL3.

It wouldn't surprise me to see them bump up the texture resolution on PC a la FakeFactory though, as recent years have seen many people get much more memory, VRAM and 64bit OS.
