Dragonforce

Saw them several years back. Not a bad band, sort of all skill... no music :p Certainly great at gigs, but actually listening to their music is kinda dull. Most the songs sound highly similar. Obviously it's all tongue in cheek though. Sam is a great laugh, I had the (mis)fortune of having to hang around with the git for a few hours, he just spent ages trying to hit on 14 year old emo girls :(

That just about covers what I thought of them. Awesome skillz, but there was just no feeling behind their music. It was all very light hearted, I like some real emotion behind music at a gig, not just "lol look at our crazy keyboard solo". Meh. I liked them at VOTD kind of time, but I've gone off them big time.

I saw them a few years ago as well, Camden Underground just after valley of the damned was released. I have to disagree with you though, the music is brilliant and I'm not sure how you can call them dull, so please expand on this opinion.

I noticed that your signature advertises a band called "sonata arctica", so I thought I'd check them out. The four songs of theirs I listened do not show a great deal of variation and seem to lack the musicianship that dragonforce posses. Granted, a sample of 4 songs isn't enough to make a particularly good judgement, but I'm sure if I took a random sample of four dragonforce songs they would probably show more variation.

well, that's your opinion. what is it with people on these forums and thinking that just because they hear a variation in music from one band, and not another, that they're automatically right!? personally, i don't like dragonforce, and i think they're really boring. granted, they can play their instruments, but so can Dream Theater, and i dont like them. So can Cradle of Filth, and i don't like them. does this make them boring, just because I don't like them? no. let the guy have his opinion; he hasn't tried to stop you having yours.

I didn't say I was right, I just stated my opinion.

For Sonata Arctica try :

Wolf and Raven
White Pearl, Black Oceans
Mary Lou (Acoustic)
Die With Your Boots On

those are the 4 songs I listen to most probably :)

You'll be the death of the music forum, with your "all opinions count equally" rubbish :p

ugh, i know - im such a hippie :p

Liberal tree-hugging homo pansy hippie more like. I've been getting into a lot of Latvian opera lately. My opinion is obviously worth the most on this forum.

And to counter sic's attempt to stop the arguing:

Sonata Arctica > Dragonforce.

Simple but true.

and just when you thought Carzy couldn't get anymore pretentious! :p

i cant imagine having a croissant with a view of the Eiffel Tower, and some 6'3, 18 stone Latvian woman squawking in my ear. sounds good though.

You must not know who I am.

I'm the music elitist snob *****!

You may aswell give up now.
He's right - your punile efforts are futile against the might of his snobbery.

You're asking me to give up?

You obviously know not of the great badgermonkey! The most annoying persistant little **** known to man! ;)

Last warning, FULLY star your swearing, as per the FAQ.

Otacon

I saw them at Download I thought the show was quite good and no doubt they have skill but the guitar playing did nothing for me. For me it was nothing that stuck in my mind and impressed me, each to their own though I guess.

Even Otacon agrees with me.

Consider this your LAST WARNING!!!

Anyways, all this kind of music is fairly rubbish anyways, I haven't listened to it in years.

It's all about the new Venetian Snares, The Timeout Drawer - Alone, and Envy - Insomniac Doze.

Corrected :)

I disagree. I think Sonata Arctica do (did perhaps?) have much more feeling behind their songs. Their lyrics to the ballads certainly seem to come from the heart and I have emotional ties with some of their songs.
Obviously i'm no one to tell you you're wrong about your opinion, I just feel that DragonForce area incredibly gimmicky, I lost touch with them when they released Sonic Firestorm, was pretty much the same as VOTD!
The previous poster said there was less variation between SA songs than there are DF songs, i'd disagree greatly there. No doubt SA songs will sound similar, but sometimes I swear DF use exactly the same chords, exactly the same solos and change the lyrics from 'through the flames!!!' etc. etc. to 'Over the mountains!!' from song to song.

Apologies for not starring it. Wont happen again.

To the above poster ^^ You ARE right, even the drummer admits that albums are done using nearly the exact same drumbeat. And verse chords do tend to be very similar. I just like them more than SA thats all :) Not sure why, since i do like SA as well, it's probably because i haven't heard anywhere NEAR as much by them, also i've seen DF live, and imo seeing a band live makes them seem even better or a hell of a lot worse. For me was the former.

I agree. Once you see a band live, your opinion of them changes dramatically. Then again, in most metal I'd say the drums are pretty much the same throughout most songs. Fairly difficult to variate drums in the metal genre, apart from either epicly long songs or drum solos ofc.
