Drake's Fortune demo on PAL PS3s

The demo is not working because the movie sequences are NTSC format. This leads to problems naturally as European PS3s are PAL. I am willing to bet that it is an oversight on Sony and Naughty Dog's part - contrary to popular belief they aren't THAT evil and will most likely issue a fix or a European demo before long.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Demo Update

+ Posted by Sam Thompson // Line Producer, SCEA

Hi, since I’m new to the blog I wanted to first introduce myself. I am the line producer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and I work with Naughty Dog on a day-to-day basis and have been working with the team since Crash Team Racing.

We are pleased to see that there is so much interest out there in the Uncharted demo, and wanted to provide a quick update.

As many of you in Europe and Japan may have already learned, today’s demo is currently only available on the North American PlayStation Store, and will only work on PS3 units in that territory. As you may already know, North America is the first region to launch Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (Monday, November 19th), and we wanted to be sure that we gave our North American PS3 players the opportunity to try out the demo prior to launch. Other territories are currently putting the finishing touches on the localization aspects of the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo, and will release it in their respective PlayStation Stores in due course.

Unfortunately when attempting to download the demo, our friends in PAL regions or Japan may have encountered a bug in which you are asked to insert a disc. Please ignore this prompt and accept our apologies.

Thanks again for your interest in the game, we hope that those of you who do get a chance to play it get a taste for what we hope will become an action-adventure classic on the PS3.

NTSC/PAL makes no difference if you are playing with a HD connection like Component or HDMI provided your TV supports both 50hz and 60hz output. (I am 99% certain on this).

They have shafted us this time pure and simple, no logical reason based on past demos.

region locked demos, region free games :(

I refuse to believe it is a "bug" considering how long these demos go though certification just to get on the store. I guess the next big demo will confirm this or not (Haze I imagine..). I'm not bothered I had to download 1.2gb or anything (although those on quotas will be), just don't like dishonesty or misinformation.

Unless the game's the same

Well I have it on pre-order and I think the full game will be fine. I will be very vocal if it becomes a region locked game, but I have faith that all PS3 retail games will be region free for the indefinite future.

Just saw this on the PS blog site as a follow up to the Uncharted Update

Hi guys and gals,

We hear you loud and clear. Wanted to chime in here and let you know that we have shared your frustration with the Naughty Dog team and we are going to see what we can do. I will be back tomorrow with an update, but in the meantime I hope you can be patient and bear with us. As you have learned through communicating with Evan and Amy on the blog, Naughty Dog is a studio that listens to gamers, so I hope to have good news for you soon.

Thanks,
Sam

So maybe we will here something today/saturday about it, perhaps either a patch of some kind to make it work or worst case just not letting you install it so it dont just crash the PS3. Hopefully its the first lol

If it was a NTSC movie problem it should not lead to a lockup, it should continue with the game after the movie, shouldn't it.

And SCEA acknowledged there is an "Insert Disc" error which has nothing to do with region locking I would think.

I am just hoping they fix it fast and give us the demo next week in Europe.

I guess the day of region locked demo's had to come sometime. I understand demo's not being availabe for legality reasons in a particular country but when it's just to finish off a few little bits it takes the p a bit does it not.

I think they need to ditch the multiple stores and have just the one store. Sort of like the PC. We don't have to wait for UK demo's do we.

I'm really fed up now, been shafted again. I will have the game on my doormat for day of release. The demo won't change that unyet this is how I get repayed.

It's nothing to do with NTSC videos. All HD sets run the same resolutions and refreshes, whether they be from here or the US, PAL/NTSC does not apply to HD stuff.

I don't believe the NTSC movies have any thing to do with it. If that really was the case then why have there been no problems with demos in the past, why can I play US Dvd's on my TV/PS3/DVD player and how can I buy games from Japan/States (they are region free after all) in NTSC format and still play them on my UK PS3 and not have problems. Why would uncharted be different, are they saying the game isn't going to be region free?.... they are just shafting us :(

Hi,

Nothing to do with NTSC videos. I have a Japanese PS3 which is NTSC and it doesnt work. You will also notice Sam states the demo not working for Jap and Europe owners. Its definately some form of region locking and either a balls up or a bug. Hopefully this will be fixed with a patch but i have a feeling they will leave it and just put the demo up on the EU PSN Store next thursday :(

I must say i am really starting to hate Sony and their lack of commitment to europe (dont get me started in the state of the EU PSN store!).

Cheers,
Hugest

Well I don't think we should be blaming Sony for this, only Naughty Dog who has already said they are looking into the issue.

It is strange, if it isn't related to the regions what the hell could it be, AFAIK the consoles are the same apart from the regions and backwards compatibility, so what the hell causes this

I used to get problems with Demos not running.

Have you tried rebooting after installing the demo? I found it fixed the issue for me :)

This will not help at all. Sony have acknowledged the problem/bug/skank etc. No amount of tinkering will make it work on a non USA PS3 model at present.

Ok, just saying that it's fixed a few iffy-demos that have played up for me in the past :p:D
