flashback is iffy too, sometimes doesn't seem to take

Definitely do a bios flashback before a return. You'll need a flash drive and a way to download the latest bios. Read the manual carefully for how to format the drive and name the file.
When you start, leave your rig alone. It takes longer on Gigabyte boards in my experience - it looks like it's doing nothing but don't interrupt it for an hour.
