Dream Theater fans - Early Systematic Chaos Review!!

I get bored when a song lasts for 14 minutes. :o

What's the difference between a 60 minute song, and a 60 minute album? A long song doesn't necessarily have less ideas and attraction than lots of short songs. You're cutting out a lot of good music with such an odd belief.

Gets a big "meh" from me, stick SFOM back in the CD player :p

I love it when fans of 'progressive' music display such a conservative attitude. The duality of it is so ironic. :p

Why do I sound like I've swallowed a dictionary today?

Well said. :)

I mean in general, I don't like listening to long songs, I get bored unless it's good all the way through, and I can barely name many songs that are good the whole way through.

Listened to the whole album now (and watched the DVD) and I absolutely love it. It just sounds like DT at their best, and that's good enough for me. ;)

Highlights are Forsaken, Constant Motion, Dark Eternal Night and Prophets of war, purely for the spine-chillingly great lyrics and riffs. I have to say, yet again my favourite songs seem to be penned by Petrucci...across all the albums, I seem to like his lyrics more than everyone elses (massive generalisation, but a disproportionate amount of my favourite DT songs are Petrucci-penned). :p

Scenes is getting too much attention in this thread, so from me; Images And Words!

:p

But back on topic; I have yet to listen to the new album, but judging by the majority of replies from this thread I'm missing out from not doing so. HMV tomorrow for me. :D

My friend/colleague's band, To-Mera, are the support for that gig. If you manage to chat with the singer, Julie, or the bassist Lee tell them I said hi and scare them.

Heh cool :) I noticed they had a support and checked out the band, looks pretty interesting.

Hehe nothing will top SFAM, it's still my favourite album of all time.

Maybe, but I'm not a "true" prog rock fan, just listen to a few prog rock bands. (see Last FM :p ) I'll give the new album more air time and see if it grows on me, but SFAM was the first DT album I listened to and the one I like the best from them :)

Images and Words is easily the best Dream Theater album. This new album is drivel, the only good song is Dark Eternal Night and even then that song is very sub par.

It's a total cliche to say it but Images and Words is truly excellent. It's a defining album in progressive metal.

For that, sir, you deserve a ' '. That emoticon is generally reserved only for Andelusion's new gear purchases, but for you, I'll make an exception. ;)

I&W is good, sure, but I don't think it's their best album, or the stellar release that others make it out to be. The production has definitely improved markedly in the newer releases, that's the only thing I'd say was massively different between albums. Other than that, their songwriting quality has always been excellent; brilliant lyrics, brilliant music, brilliant (yet tasteful) playing, catchy riffs and solos, and some plainly inspirational moments. Yes, I love Dream Theater music. :p

I know it's all personal opinion, and it's all subjective etc etc, but I love all their stuff, and can't see anything to criticise about them. Their music doesn't bore me like most songs do, but neither does it require a stupendous effort to listen to for meaning and metaphor.

Despite being a big prog and metal fan this is my first Dream Theater cd and I thinks it's awesome. Some epic riffs mixed with some prog-tastic time signatures and some cheesy lyrics, what more could you want. I really can't think why I haven't listened to them sooner.

I was the same, I couldn't criticise them about much at all until this new album came out, I just found it extremely boring when Images and Words and Scenes of A memory are so un-boring

What did you think was boring about it? In a pinch, I'd admit that 'In the Presence of Enemies' perhaps goes on too long, and a few of the instrumental breaks do likewise, but it's not something I ever really notice unless I'm sitting staring at a clock while listening.

After a few listens, I was wondering...anyone else think that 'In the Presence of Enemies' sounds very 'Octavarium' in parts? No bad thing, of course, I was just wondering if I'm alone in thinking that. And does anyone else think 'The Dark Eternal Night' sounds much less raw than the version that was on YouTube a while back? That may have beene an unmixed version, so maybe that explains it, or maybe I've listened to it so often I've gotten used to it, I dunno. :o

Aye the verses are very Metallica in terms of the vocal delivery and general rhythmic feel, I didn't like it at first but I think it's kind of a fun song, like TDEN too.

It's probably just because you were listening to it on YouTube :D
