Dress code "smart blacks"?

"Blacks" is a dress-code term used in the technical industry, basically (and obviously?) meaning "all black" - the principle being that if you are working AV support (as the OP said), you should be hiding in the shadows and invisible. Backstage staff at theatres, gigs, etc. usually wear blacks.

"Smart" is obvious - simply means non-scruffy, ie. plain and not ripped etc.

"Black trousers (not jeans) and a black shirt or a smart, black polo shirt with no logos. No need to wear a suit and tie"

This sounds exactly right.

It would have been funny to picture you walking up in full evening dress regalia, James Bond style when everyone else is wearing nike polo shirts...:)

I think it's because the guests will be in fancy clothes he's just meant to be in the shadows unseen :p

otherwise people would think a gust is nicking the telly :p

Haha. I thought he was an invited 'guest' at a works do, rather than the 'help'. Makes more sense now. :p

I expected a thread about well dressed black people.
