hi guys I need a 3/16" drill bit for my tv wall mount

also says I need a 1/2" inch masonry bit

+

wrench

firstly could I get away with not having a wrench and instead using a spanner?

secondly for the drill bit - what do the numbers 3/16" really mean?

(diameter? lenght?? - the actual length of my bolts are just under 7mm.

thanks

Its the width of the bit I thought, as in diameter. So three sixteenths of an inch. That's probably wrong but that's what I've always thought

Edit:
The Halk beet me to it and said it in a more assertive and certain way!

It's fractions of inches, apparently 3/16in is 4.7mm

Half inch is... half an inch! 12.7mm

it's the width of the bit. Find your dad, he's probably got a load of imperial stuff lying around anyway

3/16" is the diameter of the drill across the cutting edges, size is in inches, equiv is 4.76mm

the 1/2" is 12.7mm

next questions

what's the difference between

3/16" drill bit and 1/2" masonry bit?

going into blocks

1/2" is a lot bigger

use masonry bits to drill into brick & mortar, wood drills or augers for wood and high speed steel or carbide coated for steel & wood

One is 3/16ths of an inch and one is half an inch.

One is a masonry bit, and I don't know what the other is. Most likely wood if it's not specified.

cheers - yer so it is masonry (blocks)

I'm going to check out the m8 coach screws first if they are needed in the blocks

then I need to get the correct drill bit -
