Drink driving record broken...

Two very good friends of mine were killed by drink drivers in 2 separate accidents where the cars mounted the pavement.....My opinion is that drink drivers should be banned for life!.
The most I drink when driving is 2 weak shandys, ie 1 3rd pint lager with the rest lemonade.
As a vehicle recovery driver many years ago I saw first hand the carnage that can be caused by these menaces to society.
It's not something you can do 'by accident'.....you know when you are drunk so get a bloody taxi.

Yes excellent

TBH, I think i could have beaten that in my younger days of alcoholism. I regually used to drink upwards of 20 pints and drive home, but was still functioning well due to the amount of amphetamines i had also taken, luckily though, I never got caught.

I reckon I was as drunk as the Pole was, which is why I handily refused to provide a sample when I was caught. It's the only way to be sure really.

The common denominator here is reaction time and reasoning speed

so lets scrap the breath test entirely and devise a testing system for reaction time and reasoning that can be done on the side of the road.

Call the offence driving in an unfit state or something along those lines

Then you cover drinking, lack of sleep, use of drugs and other things as well all in the same thing.

I agree with this person. An arbitrary figure for alcohol in breath/blood is an extremely unscientific benchmark on which to base someone's ability to drive safely. Also, it only covers alcohol and ignores many different conditions which would render one unfit to drive safely.
A set of tests with minimum allowable levels of ability would be a much more accurate method of ascertaining an individual's ability to drive safely and would cover a whole host of other conditions like; drugs, sleep deprivation, being old and dithery amongst many others.

Aren't you the saint?

You do realise, I take it, that even your shandys[sic] will impair your driving ability.
You do not have to be over the 'legal' blood alcohol limit to be convicted for drink driving. If the police suspect and can prove that your driving has been impaired by alcohol - even if it is less than the 'legal' limit, you can still be convicted.

I would suggest that, before making brash statements like "My opinion is that drink drivers should be banned for life!.", you should ensure you won't find yourself in that situation at some point. I would also suggest that, before posting, you should carefully read your posts and check that you haven't revealed yourself to be a hypocrite.

Happy motoring :)

I wont drink alchohol if I am driving. Not a holyier than though stance just that I once decided to have 1 beer with a meal when I was out with the wife. It effected me that much I dedided not to do it again.

Most I will drink if driving is about 2 pints, but will try space it out if I can, majority of the time I only really have one though. I try not to drink at all if I'm on the bike.

Nowdays If i'm driving I just drink no more than 1 pint an hour as the body gets rid of 1 pint an hour, that way i can stay out with the lads and still drive home safely.

To be honest all the Government needs to do is enforce national Prohibition and ban cars completely. Job done ;)

In all seriousness, I think the guy mentioned in the OP needed a bit of a harsher punishment than he actually received.

With regards to mobile phones & drinking I saw the U.S Myth busters recently where they got one of the men and women to do tests whilst sober , sober with mobile and drunk.

The drunk results were the worst but the mobile phone results were not too far off. They had to perform certain complex tasks whilst on the phone like doing arthritic and repeating phrases back to the guy on the other end. Quite interesting.

If you had 3 shandies would you mount the pavement?

I agree.

I think drink driving is a stupid thing to do but I think some people overreact with their moral high ground.

I don't really think drink drivers are scum, they are just drunk. People do stupid things when they are drunk. If they plan to do it even when they are sober and do it on a regular basis then I might agree they are scum then.

Such scum decided to plough into my Fiancee and kill her. Drink drivers are scum, they are driving a tonne of metal with no consideration for anyone else around them and are just as likely to kill someone else as themselves. If they end up in a ditch at 60 mph and die without hurting anyone else then good riddance.

Some people get drunk and turn violent and go around looking for fights... oh guess they are just drunk so that is ok to.

Not at all....never have I professed to be one.

Being a nineteen stone fat ******* two thirds of a pint has no effect on me.
I took part in a reaction test a couple of years ago and it wasn't until I had consumed 3 pints that my reaction time was impaired and then it was by only .25 of a second.
I am referring to the people who knowingly get in a car after consuming vast quantities of alcohol and are very aware that they are unfit to drive and still do so.

Ok Ok I do agree with the hypocrite statement when you put it like that but I'm only a slight hypocrite:D

Another update, he was sentenced today, he received...

3 months in prison, 4 months tag when he is released, 4 year driving ban.

He came into work the other day and everyone was laughing and joking with him about what happened, really ***** me off as i'm sure they wouldn't be doing the same if he'd killed somebody.
