- Eat before you touch your first drop of alcohol. Critical.
- Stay away from beer, and darker spirits, they contain more cogeners, which make you feel like crap. Not to mention staying on beer all night beer will make you need a wazz every 15 minutes. Gin & Tonics, Mojitos etc may be pricier, but they go down well with no bloaty feeling, and keep you more hydrated through the course of a night.
- Don't mix your drinks, especially wine and just about anything else.
- Have a pint of water every few drinks to stay hydrated.
- Don't fall into the shots trap (stag weekend staple) if you know you're not a big drinker, else you will be a dribbling mess by halfway through the night.
- Buy a pack of rehydration salts from the supermarket in the UK and take it with you (usually a pack of 10), take one in the morning with a pint of water. Sorts you out good and proper.
The above may get you a solid ribbing from your friends, but if you are willing to brave that then the above will go a long way to preventing alcohol-induced misery.
I agree with most of this besides the last few points.
If I drink too much beer or wine I get massive hangovers. 4/5 pints then onto the Vodka and I tend to be ok the next day (usually a few Jagers thrown in there as well).
I'd drink vodka all night but I do like a few beers first.
Other than what's been said, get a few glasses of water and food in you before you sleep.
If you think you'll be rough, take a couple of paracetamol/Neurofen or whatever before you go to bed as well.
