Drinking alcohol advice

  • Eat before you touch your first drop of alcohol. Critical.
  • Stay away from beer, and darker spirits, they contain more cogeners, which make you feel like crap. Not to mention staying on beer all night beer will make you need a wazz every 15 minutes. Gin & Tonics, Mojitos etc may be pricier, but they go down well with no bloaty feeling, and keep you more hydrated through the course of a night.
  • Don't mix your drinks, especially wine and just about anything else.
  • Have a pint of water every few drinks to stay hydrated.
  • Don't fall into the shots trap (stag weekend staple) if you know you're not a big drinker, else you will be a dribbling mess by halfway through the night.
  • Buy a pack of rehydration salts from the supermarket in the UK and take it with you (usually a pack of 10), take one in the morning with a pint of water. Sorts you out good and proper.

The above may get you a solid ribbing from your friends, but if you are willing to brave that then the above will go a long way to preventing alcohol-induced misery.

I agree with most of this besides the last few points.

If I drink too much beer or wine I get massive hangovers. 4/5 pints then onto the Vodka and I tend to be ok the next day (usually a few Jagers thrown in there as well).

I'd drink vodka all night but I do like a few beers first.

Other than what's been said, get a few glasses of water and food in you before you sleep.

If you think you'll be rough, take a couple of paracetamol/Neurofen or whatever before you go to bed as well.

I find a glass of milk and toast + honey effective the next morning - hangover mostly gone within an hour (and thats off the back of 6x double JD + coke last night which is a fair amount).

Paracetamol only last a couple of hours in effect, so will wear off by morning. Best time to take them is with the rehydration salts in the morning.

My other half doesn't get hangovers from Guinness. But it's not great for me... he farts something shocking when he's been on the Guinness. Is there a reason for that or is it just him?

Fair point but I quite often wake up during the night with a huge headache and find it hard to get back to sleep :)

Do not mix your drinks if possible and stick to quality drinks.

No pints of cheap lager, always bottles.

If you hit the shorts, drink good quality vodka / whisky and slimline mixers.
