Driver caught doing 154mph and only gets 56 day ban!

Just to clarify, the A11 where this happened would generally be pretty quiet at 9PM on a Monday night, but it's an unlit dual carriageway rather than a well lit motorway.

I've seen plenty of deer milling around down there too which would be enough to put me off doing any kind of daft speed down there at night though.

Sat in a Civic type R doing 145mph. My mate was driving. He asked me to look at the speedo as he didn't dare look down, when I told him he instantly hit the brakes. Scary yet exciting and very stupid. I nearly soiled myself!

I think the most I've ever personally done is a mere 90 on the m4 one Sunday afternoon. I'm too paranoid about getting caught, I'm also aware I'm not the greatest driver in the world! That's a good thing really!

People crash because they underestimate the roads / overestimate their own abilities.

Don't see a problem with the speed if the conditions allow for it and its legal. But here in the UK its not legal. Speed is not the issue, just the loons behind the wheel doing excessive speed when conditions do not allow or there are other road users around.

I remember driving in Germany and the car was fitted with winter tyres, I was told on the un-restricted parts of the autobahn not to exceed 210km/h as that was maximum allowed speed for that vehicle on its winter tyres. I was mighty disappointed as being in a Porsche I wanted to max its speed out.

So I drove at a constant 210km/h (130mph) in the un-restricted parts, lets just say it greatly reduced my journey time and I survived. :)

Sorry petrolheads, but I'm very familiar with that section of the A11 and doing over 100mph there is absolute madness under any conditions.

Could you explain why? If I'm looking at the right section, it's long, straight, with clear visibility and the whole road has recently been resurfaced with fresh tarmac. And there's only one major junction in about 6 miles.

What am I missing which would make this piece of road, which seems absolutely ideal and purpose built for high speeds, madness to negotiate at more than 100mph?

Not being facetious, or justifying this guy's actions. But genuinely interested what makes this road so dangerous I've driven once before, but at the time it was being widened so it was basically a roadworks zone.

Many years ago i hit 152 in a Nisan 200sx was pretty scary but also exciting at the same time.

Obviously would not do it now, as the roads are much busier and of poor condition, plus the ban would not be worth it.

Done 110mph as indicated by GPS once, never again. Also been a passenger in a B6 once at 250km/h which is about 150mph, did not enjoy it. Pootling along for me nowadays

Maxed the GTR out before, interestingly stable right until the end, pulled the entire way until the last 5mph or so, that was the scary part that at 150+ mph it was still pulling to go faster.

Ironically our motorway network is generally better than the Autobahn network - safer and longer sliproads, more lanes, softer curves.

Our motorways are somewhat newer than the original German Autobahns and were originally intended to be unrestricted (And were therefore designed with very high cruising speeds in mind)

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before the Bansturbators put their collective boot in!

:(

Yes is a shame, I always hoped M6 toll might be unrestricted limit when conditions are dry and traffic low.

But saying that few weeks ago on motorway I was cruising around 90mph indicated in M3, which does over-read, was around 84mph GPS I think, straight pass a camera van, had nothing through the post.

Either his camera was not being operated or because the entire motorway was moving at 80+ maybe to get the ticket you need to be going faster?

Isn't the fine means tested on ability to pay?

Also, I'm slightly surprised about how many people here claim to have never hit three figures. It's worryingly easy in anything moderately new thats 250bhp+
Accelerating down a slip road for example from 3rd to 6th and your past 70, 80, 90 in seconds and well on your way to 100+, especially considering that you can do 100+ in 4th gear with two to go if you really wring it out!

Obviously 154mph has meant keeping his foot in a little longer, but not a great deal more these days. While not condoning his actions it does make the punishment seem odd considering the modern ease these speeds can be reached.

I think with the car he was driving he'd have being well above 100 for a very long time, its a Seat Leon, so a sub 300BHP car which are not particular quick, but not slow either, but reaching 150mph would have meant he had his foot in it for some time. Unless of course it was some tuned up 500+ horsepower one.

To hit 150mph in a short distance and short time you need 500+ horsepower, a car like a Nissan GTR will accelerate upto 150mph and back to zero before most cars can even accelerate upto 100, let alone stop. To get to 150 quick takes some horsepower.

I usually sit at 80mph indicated which is 75mph on GPS, never had any issues..

then again I'm a freshie and I keep my within the speed limit 99% of the time.

Look at the use of the Road:

- Its a main artery between Cambridge and Norwich, so likely to have its fair share of HGV traffic.

- Center-parcs Elvedon Forest is on that stretch, so a load of tourists who don't know the area puttering about.

- USAF Air bases nearby, so a bunch of eegits who want to drive on the wrong side of the road

- There are definitely Muntjack Wild Deer in the area - I've seen them when at Centre parcs and also Thetford Forest.

- Its SUFFOLK !!! They're not the quickest off the mark ..... I have family over there and we do feel like we're stepping back in time every time we visit.

I've been a passenger in a car that did 152 in Germany on an Autobahn, that was plenty scary enough, to do it in the UK isn't something I would relish the idea of doing tbh.

I've been 180mph + on the autobahn. Completely safe depending on conditions, traffic etc.

Will the Germans always be so liberal with their Autobahn?

I doubt it.

I think up to 90-95mph is reasonable on a motorway with modern cars and the law seems out of date. (Taking into account differential, so what's that.... 85?)

Speeding is subjective.

If it's an empty dual carriageway or motorway then whatever.

Kind of agree. It is subjective for sure.

So, usually sit over the speed limit, then straight away say you stay within it 99% of the time.

Which is it?
