Drivers attitudes to cyclists

Cyclists - could you just answer this one for me please?

Along London Rd in Coventry, there is a perfectly good cycle lane as you head into Cov city centre. On the way out, cyclists can use the bus lane. So why is it that none of you ignorant sods actually use the lanes provided for you so you can be safe and stay out of the way of drivers? Instead, you wobble about in the road. Getting in the way of everyone. And then, you have the audacity to have a gripe at me driving past you - I wouldn't mind, but I did get right over into the other side of the road. But apparently this isn't good enough for you sandal wearing, bearded, vegetarian, Guardian reading hippy morons :)

I know a few very courteous cyclists....well....one, actually. And he lives in Stretton (near Burton-on-Trent), where you don't get a cycle lane until you're practically out of the village. But he still manages to not get in the way of the vast amount of traffic that streams through the village every single day. It's just a shame you can't all be like that.

That post sounds like it was directed at a lot of people no? I never cycled in london, I do cycle through York and I do use the bus lane as do most people, I dont get in the way of buses in the bus lane too as I go faster than them :D, apart from when there are bumps I have to slow down or I'll trash my fragile bike. Round were I live there are NO cycle lanes for about 11 miles (York).

I think what I am getting at (and what Scuzi correctly said to me) is how much of this discussion is here-say and "all drivers/cyclists" do this.

For the record, I am not anti-car in anyway, indeed, I drive a lot as well as cycling. There have been some crass anti-cycling and anti-car comments some of which are very ill informed. (I must admit that I have been guilty of this here too, and have been corrected about my comments on insurance).

What I cannot understand is the lack of tolerance by many who may be held up for a few seconds on their journey.

Out of interest willhub, do you hold a driving licence for a car?

No and I wont have for a long time, why? Its the main reason why I got into cycling, I thought well I aint paying 6-8 quid a day for buses when I can do the same journey and quicker than the buses everytime for free! And I cant afford a car so I cycle and enjoy doing it.

Cycling has also improved my health, before I started I got colds all the time, like ever 2-3 weeks I got a new cold but since I started cycling about this time last year I've had about 1 or 2 colds and thats it.

Yesterday i cycled 20miles and i would say 15 of that was on cycle paths and cycle lanes. The lanes on the road werent too bad however the cyclepaths were terrible. They were uneven, potted and very uncomfortable to ride on and even sometimes quite painfull. Also while using the cycle paths its impossible to maintain any cycling fluidity as you constantly have to cross roads and dismount for cars turning. Given the choice i would use cycle lanes and roads only.

Cycle paths around my area are no good for me as they are not suitable for road bikes, the paths are too messy and not smooth enough.
