Drives for NAS

The best thing you can do for reliability is get them from different batches so that the mean time to failure is different for each drive.

I can't find the article on it now which is annoying, but that was the gist of it. If more than 1 drive dies at once on the Synology Hybrid RAID you're stuffed.

deskstar

everybody knows about the western digital red drives for use in server and professional grade situations. It has to be said that you don't hear to many bad things about those drives however from what i have also read the the Desk star drives are equally good but fro the availability i would go with the WD red.:)

best value for money if you look around is the 3tb reds not the 6tb as some one keeps trying to point out.

Most issues you hear about regarding the WD Reds is due to the way the drives have been transported to people but this can be the case with any hard drives.

If the 3's fill up, then you'd need to buy a bigger NAS.

Best £ per TB maybe, but not best TB per HDD slot.

but two separate 3tb drives are cheaper then one 6tb drive the prices on these drives are seriously wrong and might be better off buying smaller ones to use with usb.

I needed to expand my NAS and decided to go for the 3tb. I couldn't justify £420 for 6tb in raid1. Definitely the best value.
Also the thought of loosing 6tb of data was too much.

I will wait until these large capacity drives are much more common and well tested before I take the risk and expense.

Luckily I have the space for up to 4 more drives so it was an easier decision.

ye get the red for long duration as even though sometime the specs of hardrives like the rpm seem slower etc its just because the data density is beeter requring less speed to search for the data across the drive so ye get the red if you can afford it as the greens do fail a fair bit more than the certified ones

I bought 2x6TB WD drives about a month ago and very happy with the decision.

I will add a few more when budget allows to increase the capacity.
