Scania’s will hill hold 44t without a problem - the gatehouse at Stobarts in Stoke is at the top of a steep hill, tbh it was the only time I really ever used it.
I still prefer the handbrake mind you!

Get in, foot on brake, put it in D, foot off brake... use brake, use accelerator, stop, brake, put it in P.
Entire journey right there.
Don't use the hand brake, it's pointless unless you're parking on a big hill and don't want the weight of the vehicle on the transmission pin.

I know, just pointing one will/should easily hold a vehicles max loaded weight otherwise, what’s the point?
I’d argue your vans have a fault that needs looking into, no matter if it’s a 1ton car or 44ton artic the hill hold should be able to hold that vehicles maximum authorised weight (ie fully laden) easily.
If your handbrake didn’t hold on a hill you’d get it checked,the same principle applies here.
Must say though like you, I still prefer the handbrake.

When the MOT time comes around and the handbrake mechanism is used on the rolling road for the first time in 12 months and it seizes up
and won't release { an MOT fail and a bas tard to fix } you might regret not using it occasionally.
Florida doesn’t have MOTs
That said, a friend of mine had a similar issue. Never used his handbrake until he needed it to change a wheel, then it seized on him and wouldn’t release again...
Can't speak for the Hilux as I've never tried starting on a hill in one but my Navara easily handles its own weight on a hill.
Does anywhere in the US have MOTs? We don't have them in TN either and if we did it'd take about 90% of the vehicles off the road. People here drive around with red tape over where their brake lights should be, bin bags for windows and complete body panels missing.Florida doesn’t have MOTs

Some autos have a wide brake pedal which the first time auto user will catch with their left foot when they press the imaginary clutch pedal.

Is it only certain makes that do this, i had an auto mustang in florida a few years ago (absolutely atrocious box) and that had a wide pedal, but most european ones ive seen are normal width.
My old mans e39 failed it’s MOT consistently with a seized handbrake - he never used it just put it in park - I bought it off him and he was surprised when I said it passed its MOT with no advisories, he asked what about the handbrake and I said simple dad, I use it so it won’t seize.
For the same reason I use the handbrake on my e38 constantly even though it’s foot operated (yuk!) and I always feel the release handle is going to break when you pull it.

word of warning, when you drive an automatic, you'll never want another manual again. I put off autos during 15yrs of driving.
Then I ended up in an auto and loved it. Absolutely loved it. Last few years have been in an Auto.

dunno, depends what you drive.
for my daily driver my lexus is250 auto is perfect, does all I need it to.
for my fun weekend toy the s2000 with a sweet manual is a lot of fun after weeks of driving the auto.
I can't imagine enjoying the s2k as much with an auto, even a good one.
I'm not against a manual - it can be fun in the right circumstances but in this day and age I have a hard time justifying a manual for normal driving it just seems an extra encumbrance for the sake of it.

Despite the advice on here not to use the stick brake when parking an auto unless on a hill (also common practice is the USA)
I would advise against it. Someone on a forum I was on had his car lightly shunted in a parking space. Insurance repaired the bodywork and when he got it back, P no longer worked as the gearbox had been damaged. The insurers refused to replace the gearbox saying it was a mechanical fault that could have failed any time and also would not have hapened in the accident if parked with parking brake on as per the highway code.

So when you stop in a manual what pedals do you press? Severely lacking in either experience or imagination
