Driving in snow

I miss sliding the 5 :( :(

Still managed to take a few corners with a bit of a drift on my eurobox (with TC off) - quite easy to pull out of a slide with a FWD car though.

Of course there were 100 kids around, and people, and I killed all of them doing that.

I've had fun this morning in the works lwb Transit. The main roads round here (Skipton) are fine but I popped up to Hellifield to drop off a table and chairs for a colleague and the side road was very interesting. Use of the hand brake got it turned round easily enough but getting moving again was hard work. Luckily there was a grit box close by so I could salt round the wheels to get a bit of momentum going.

used the wifes CRV yesterday when it was really bad.
Dead easy in the snow, just stick the auto in either 2nd or 1st for the tricky bits and all was well.
Apart from stupid taxi driver who decided to sit right behind me on the road to the office. Come to the last hill, slow down, put it in first and let it crawl its way up slowly job done. Taxi on the other hand was banking on me going quick up the hill, end result he had to slow down that much he was loosing grip. serve the muppet right for tailgating. He got up the small hill, but took him a while. :p

I don't know what it is with taxi drivers and 4x4s, do they have magic brakes or something? Both were sitting right up my trumpet yesterday in the snow/slush and I saw one BMW 4x4 zoom past me at 50 (everyone else was doing 25) and then barge into the roundabout queue. Hopefully he froze to death overnight, upside down in his 4x4 in a ditch.

Rule #1 of driving a 4x4 in snow:
You have twice the car of everyone else, including:
-4 driving wheels.
-4 steering wheels.
-8 wheels for braking.
So drive with impunity.

i think you'll find 4x4 = 16
so long, suckers!

it's understandable that people are going 0.1mph, but i'd rather they just stayed at home if it's snowing.

what is unacceptable is people going 0.1mph on roads that are just wet as all the snow has melted

Nail, Head.

Same issue with many areas of this country, they happily spend our taxes on anything other than what's required.....
given the amount of outlay needed for the relatively short annual period of snow, i suspect you'd prefer to have good service in other sectors with the level of tax you pay now, rather than a reduced service in other sectors and/or increased council tax.

There are some things that councils can do that do not add much cost, eg have most vehicles, eg rubbish trucks etc, capable of having a plough fitted to the front.

However, looking at other countries that do get a lot of snow, it's more a case of the drivers using winter tyres etc etc

it's not only winter tyres for drivers, but equipment for gritting, plowing, etc are inluded in the budgets.
it's just not cost effective to have a massive budget for snow removal in most parts of the UK

First bit of driving in the snow tonight.

Ended up being the "pace setter" because the numptys in front were accelerating up to 40-45mph and then slowing right down to 20mph, causing lots of sharp braking etc.

Simon do you work in Reading? Keep seeing some dodgy geez'a in an S2k at Tescos in the Morning. :p

I work in Pangbourne but live in Reading. I rarely go to tesco in mornings though, if I do it's for fuel as the local shell is being rebuilt I think

I really feel like I'm missing out on all this. I've never had the experience of 4 hours to get 10 miles or anything like that. It must suck day in day out but experience makes us better people and all that :p

Just boring dull normal weather here, as is always the case.
Lucky you !!!!

You REALLY don't want to go through the pain that is trying to get home in these conditions. Tonight I had to abandon my car and walk 5 miles home :(

Had to drive to an exam today in my s2k and let's just say it was interesting. I was pootling along and the backend was getting twitchy. I drove my mates MX5 for a few years with a bit of snow and ice thrown in and that was a lot easier to tame in these conditions.
