Driving lesons, speeding through camera

Hi all.

Ive been learning for about 2 months, i went on a dual carrage way today for the second time. I was learning overtaking. It was also teaching me speed controll because when your going 70 on a dual carrageway, its so easy to find yourself going over the speed limit on normal roads.

Anyway, we encountered road works on the carrageway so the limit went from 70 to 40. I hit 40 and THOUGHT i was maintaining 40, but i hit 50 and went through a camera. My instructer said i can get points off my provisional or a fine?

Has anyone ever got a fine in their drivng lessons? What are the chances you think of anything happening to me?

I think its a bit unfair as it was my only second time at going at high speed :(

Although it may be your fault, its a pretty rubbish instructor that lets you go through a speed camera, they have dual controls for a reason.

Did it flash, or was it an average speed check?

I dont know, i was nervous and diddnt even notice a camera. I think it flashed because my instructer tried to break fast and said ops you've gone through a camera now.

I diddnt even know you can have points taken off yoru provisional  If i get fined for this, how much is it?

I'd be pretty miffed if an instructor allowed me to go through a speed camera at above the speed limit.

Fingers crossed you didnt get caught mate. I'd sack your instructer! IMO until you've passed his has the ultimate control over the vehicals speed and should have at the very least told you to slow down well before the camera!

Exactly. The instructor should have been watching your speed and intervened to prevent this happening to be honest.

You may be lucky but as far as I know they just treat it like any other speeding fine.

You'll get 3 points, a 60 quid fine and a slap on wrist then sent on your way.

Unlucky bud, very easily done though.

Bad instructor though, he should have been keeping an eye on your speed and kept telling you if you were going off the limit.

I was on the impression both the instructor and the leaner got the points ?

as technically both are 'in control' ?

ye you can get points and if you do this is not good for you or your instructor.

I know someone that got flashed by a camera when still learning, luckily for her her mum took her points.

£60 fine and 3 points, you could probably try and weasel your way out of it with a letter saying you weren't aware of the limit or something as you have only just started learning.

Would the 3 points be carried over to his full license, assuming he passes? That would mean if he speeds once again and gets caught in his first 2 years of driving, he will have to redo his test

I was told by my instructor that indeed you can have point on a provisional licence, maybe he told me this so I wouldnt speed though :o

Also maybe you should ask why your instructor didnt apply the breaks sooner.

Not a good excuse, I'm afraid. I had never been above 50 until I passed. With that logic then since I had never been taught I would not have grasped the sense of speed and could find myself at 90, but since I was a beginner it would be ok.
If you can stick under 30 then you can do the same at 70, it's what a speedo is for.

Bad luck though

Damn unlucky if you get points/fine either way if you do get a slapping id change drving instructors ASAP as someone who cant even teach someone else the road who dosent know the road themselves should not be driving imo lol

you can get point on a prov, hell u can get points even if u dont have a prov , its how u can get banned before u even got your licence

50 indicated is about 45~ GPS speed, and the Cameras in this area are set at 10% + 2.

I know many people who i've seen doing 50 through a camera and nothing has come of it. All depends on your speedo and whether you were really doing 50 or just over?

You can get points on a provisional. I had 3 before I got my full licence. It carries over to your full licence, and will count towards the two year 6 point limit.
I would complain to the driving school if you do get a nip through, as although the overall responsibility lies with you as the driver, the instructor must have been aware that you were in a reduced limit area. He should also have seen the camera in good time to warn you, and could have slowed the car using the dual controls.

In many ways, he has the advantage of not driving the car at the time, and should have been far more aware of his surroundings. Seems like he wasn't paying attention to me.
