Driving London to York, places to stop on the way?

Ok, while you are in York you MUST go here and have a few beers and some grub. My fave place in York. http://www.tremblingmadness.co.uk/

Also while you are there you have the train museum which is quite good (free entry) http://www.nrm.org.uk/ . Its very close to York's main station. We took at train to Harrogate (also well worth a look into! ;)) and sat in the station was a magnificent old steam engine ready for a journey. You can walk around a good part of York's old city walls giving you a good view of its surroundings. If your into churches (not my thang) you have York's cathedral (NOT free entry). The city itself is really nice to walk around.

In early March we are heading to York for a week and will be driving up. What nice places are there on the way to stop off to break up the journey? Like somewhere for lunch, or nice places to visit. When we drive to Cornwall we usually stop at Exeter, or some coastal villages or farm shops (I'm a country bumpkin at heart :p).

You're in Surrey? If you're travelling at the weekend, leave in good time, use the M25 and the M1 and you'll be in York for lunch, even with taking a couple of breaks at services.

Alas the GF has decided on a mid week break, before she realised that means driving around the M25 on a Monday morning..... :(

I drove to Luton every day for 6 months... I'm not looking forward to it.

Its not just York. Were staying in a cabin with a hot tub on the edge of the moors. We will spend the week going lots of places.

"Driving from London to a small holiday cabin in the woods 30 miles north of York, sort of near Pickering and that sort of area, where to stop on the way" was too long a thread title :p.

go to masham and do 2 brewery trips in a day...

drive through beautiful wensleydale to hawes, stop at Aysgarth falls, follow the tour de france route over buttertubs (weather permitting)

head over the North York Moors to Whitby

head into upper teesdale to walk along the River Tees from low force to high force...or if you want to see bleak and windswept head all the way up to Cow Green Reservoir to see Cauldron Snout, or if you want a big hike go and see Highcup Nick, one of the greatest examples of a glacial Valley you will in the country

all within easy driving of the Pickering area

Another fantastic and beautiful town to visit while you are there is Knaresborough.

There you will find some of the best fish and chips in the country! ;)

Scarborough will make you feel instantly better about your life.

Whitby for Fish & Chips, The Moors for fresh air, York for old things and shops, York Retail park for brownie points.
