Hello all. I have been hearing different stuff about changing gears.

Im a new driver myself so for me changing gears is stick clutch down and shift and put foot down on acceleator.

I have heard of a different way of changing gears. (obviously the same principle), They said it was a racing way. Cant remember what it was but it had something about heel? toe ball??

Sorry I cant remember, but what im basically asking is. Is there any way to speed up gear changes.

P.s How much life do wheelspins take of your tyres? Say if you did it like once a week at a junction. Slam accelerator down, have the tyres spin for couple of secs before shooting of. Just wondering :o

Heel and toe :~) You've got to be driving the right type of car to do it. With racing-spaced pedals and a quick shift gear box.

Honestly though I'd give it a year or so before starting to change your driving style from what you've been taught.

What car are you driving? If you're just slipping the wheels on some dirt then that's not really going to wear your tyres. It's when you're making your tyres smoke that it severely wears them.

heel? toe ball?
heel and toe is used when cornering while driving hard. You sit your rightfoot over both pedals (heel over accelerator and toe over break) which allows you to downshift while breaking and simeltaneously touching the accelerator to match the engine revs to the gear.

Surely you mean toe on brake and heel on accelerator! I'm not sure its possible to do the opposite.

Surely you mean the other way round?

Edit : and with your right foot too.

Theres no point trying heel and toe if you don't know what engine speed matches what road speed and in which gear - practice 'blipping' the throttle whilst changing down on a bit of straight road. If you get it spot on the car shouldn't 'lurch' at all. Get that down to a tee when changing down one gear, two gears, three gears, etc, at all sorts of different speeds, and then worry about doing it while braking at the same time :)

[edit] Just seen you're a new driver - don't bother for a while! It'll take time for a lot of the important (safe) aspects to driving to become natural to you; whilst you're still having to think about them you don't want your concentration distracting by messing about with engine revs etc. :)

maybe hes got a backwards car?

dont try it on a small pug or citron the pedals are too close

rubbish, I regularly do it on my 205, have done on a friend's 106 too :)

has worked in every manual car ive driven so far.

first learn how to double de clutch smoothly and quickly

then learn how to do it whilst braking.

simple as that. if youre not cut out of it, youll soon stack your car

This is pretty redundant with the invention of syncromesh gearboxes, back in the 50s........Yes, there's some minimal savings regarding wear to the syncromesh cones but other than that, you're just making your shifts take ages.

I think you may have misintepreted the use of that technique and or/are muddling them up a little :)

Straight shifting sans clutch for the win!

what did you think it was ?
Heel and toe is revving the engine whilst braking to give a smoother change down. You don't have to double de clutch.

Sod the clutch altogether - change up and down without! :)

lol I love forums, everyone thinks they know for sure what something is when they are clearly wrong. You dont need heal and toe for every day driving on modern cars. end of.

when it comes to braking I push the brakes lol. I let the revs drop down to what I know will be 3000-4000rpm in the next gear and then change.

Works like a dream atm.

Allows you to accelerate and decellerate smoothly.

I think the tyres are just loosing grip. Incredibly fun though. Pushing the accelerator down and having the wheels just spinning. :D Then to ease of slightly and shoot of.

I allow myself this pleasure once a week.

Usually on a friday after college. So much fun. Especially if you have someone in the car who is ******* themselves thinking I am a "rubbish" driver. After a while they relax though
