Driving questions

I agree, defensive driving keeps you out of trouble, but sometimes, when you're boxed in and someone encroaches on you, it's the only option.

I drive a little mx5 which had a feeble horn as standard. I replaced it with a Nautilus air horn, commonly fitted to motorbikes, so small enough to squeeze into the mx5. A blast of the Nautilus gets people's attention!
I love the Nautilus, they are superb. I fit them to all of my cars, but also use a bypass switch so I can disable them when I want to give someone a friendly toot instead of a heart attack.

I would prefer it if people concentrate on their own driving more than that of others.

I only use the horn if I actively have to brake or make avoidance manoeuvres, other wise it's just a bit, well, -ish.

While we are having a moan though - couple of nights ago was driving home and at a roundabout someone had to give way to me on joining as they arrived on my left slightly after me gave me very little room even though obvious what I was doing - had to pretty much bully my way over to the left. Was doing a good 30 in the 30 and they were right up behind me tailgating. Got to a dual-carriageway and they pre-emptively moved over to overtake so I eased up to around 60 to give them plenty of time to complete their manoeuvre - at 60 they were half a car length ahead of me doing like 58-59MPH slowly dropping back so I was like this is stupid and put my foot down. Unfortunately the next town I had to wait at roadworks and they caught up with me again - tailgating me through the 30s and 40s and used a right turning lane only to overtake me - then continued on doing 45-48MPH or so in the 30s and 40s. Caught them up again on a long stretch of NSL where they were doing like 45-48MPH where it was perfectly safe to do 60 - so overtook them and fortunately they never caught me up again.

Not sure how anyone is that stupid or why it is such a big deal to just drive reasonably to the speed limits in built up areas.

Sounds like you need to chill out and practice some defensive driving techniques.

Once you start to react to the stupid driving around you, you will become distracted and your driving will suffer then someone will be wanting to sound their horn at you (oh my the shame)

Slow down, give yourself space, learn to read other drivers and don't react to everything that annoys you. You can then watch the stupid driving happen and not be part of it.

Horn only comes out if someone is about to drive into the side of me. If they've just mindless started drifting or they're too busy on their phone to know where they're going it normally brings them round, if they're a knob who knew exactly what they were doing because they've got many important places to be then it at least makes me feel better.

Out of interest do you have that list stuck to your dashboard so you can reference the correct number and length of horns?

I thought number 12 was particularly interesting! He'd be a nightmare in busy traffic, constantly beeping his horn everytime someone changes lane. Although he doesn't say if it's a short horn or a long horn.

Maybe he mixes it up a little, adds a bit of spice into his driving life. I wonder if he beeps in morse code.

Ah, sorry, I forgot to include the bit - WITHOUT INDICATING

Wow.

I don’t think I need to read any further to discover that you’re a dreadful driver, unsafe and shouldn’t be on the road.

What would you do if the non-learner in front of you is going at 15 while the speed limit is 30 and there is absolutely no one in front of him for miles?

What if there's another car in between you and the non indicator do they still get a horn while the guy in the middle ends up totally confused?
Of course not. e.g. Me and other cars are driving at 50 on a dual carriageway and the fella in the next lane comes in front of me all of a sudden without indicating. I have to brake and reduce my speed in order not to rear end him.

You specified in a residential area. You don’t know why he’s driving slowly, there could be a hazard you’re not aware of. You then said you’d sound your horn. The horn is not to be used to get people to hurry up, it’s only to warn other drivers of your presence.

If you overtake, you’re putting yourself on the other side of the road in a residential area. If anyone runs out into the road, they’re first going to be looking the other way. It’s a very dodgy place to overtake.

You’re coming across as a very aggressive driver.

The quality of driving is ***** in London. There are a large number of non-UK license holders driving around and these lot would struggle to pass our driving tests!
These days, you have to drive with the attitude Let the other driver hit me and when he goes through his insurance he will learn his lesson.

I have a no.14

14. What would you do if someone tailgates you on a dual carriageway or motorway? I quick tap on my brakes twice.
What if someone is tailgating you on a residential road?

Either overtake when safe with zero flashes of lights or horn use, just a clean safe overtake. Or and this might go against your personal highway code, carry on behind them at 15mph in not in a rush.

You really come across like you shouldnt be allowed the privilege of driving.

Looking at his previous posts in Motors, he's coming across as a wind up :p

He's afraid to parallel park, he asked if he needed a full respray to sell a car with parking dings, he got upset at paying £250 when 'his brother' hit another car because the guy in bodyshop was foreign...

This thread would be appear to just be his latest nonsense to stir up some responses

Depends if it is actually a brake check - normally I don't react to them but I had someone the other day where it was so unnecessary and dangerous I tapped the brakes several times just enough to illuminate the brake lights to hint to them to back off - when they didn't I pulled over at the next opportunity because there was such a risk of an accident. Normally I just ease up a bit and ignore them.

Ironically I think they thought I was going to road rage them when I pulled over and stopped short of me then backed up a little and took a nearby road off instead.

Like I said in that thread from eons ago, I struggle to parallel park in tight spaces!
