Driving while texting

I find it rather awkward to text on my iPhone when driving, just don't bother now at all.

On a side note, TomTom have just released their iPhone app. Is using that while driving going to be as bad as texting? Presumably people won't have a stand in the same way they do for proper SatNavs so the iphone'll be on the lap or something..?

They should be purchasing a stand then.

I use nav on my phone and I have a £5 cradle I bought that fits most phones, I run nav and ignore the phone side of things.

I've been known to once or twice.. but in my defense, I can touch-text (therefore keep my eyes on the road all times). Unfortunately (or fortunately) I can no longer do so with my new touchscreen phone so texting while driving is definitely out!

Indeed, used to be able to touch-text with my old phone so used to do it quite often, can just about do it with the iphone because of the auto correct but its not ideal.

i can touch text. if i have to look away from the road ahead, it will be for 2-3 seconds at a time. im not a suicidal emo so im going to text sensibly, if i have to text while driving

When do you HAVE to text while driving? (clue, never). 3 seconds is over 90 meters at 70mph, doesn't sound sensible to me.

Hopefully the artic driver who wandered totally over onto the hard shoulder on the M5 yesterday morning whilst typing an SMS will see this. :(

i can choose when to take my eyes off the road. i wouldnt take my eyes off the road with other cars around. people take their eyes off the road for longer to change a cd or look at sat nav

You try taking your eyes off the road for 3 seconds. It's quite a long time, and rather disconcerting in any environment other than maybe a totally empty motorway or something :p

Yup. I don't do it anyway, if I get a call or text and have a passenger, I throw the phone at them. :p Else I just ignore it. :)

It's one of my pet hates, at least with being on the phone you can still keep eyes on the road, whereas texting you don't...don't do either though and don't like it when someone is driving me and they do it.

Your phone has tiny little microscopic keys you need to prod with a pin in order to type with, though ;)

I've done it at a set of traffic lights for a quick "10 mins" sort of text. But that's about it. I've never texted whilst driving - can't do it (i.e. I'm not able to do it - all the better for me then really :p).

Doesn't make it right though - and people have been done for driving without due care and attention for exactly that.

Why was that burgundy Fiesta heading straight towards them on the wrong side of the road?

What a load of crap.

Moral of the video is, Girls are stupid and shouldn't be allowed to drive.

i disagree. given the circumstances, there are differing degrees of dangerous. given that driving is inherently dangerous, certain additional risks are acceptable. i wouldnt suggest anyone attempt sending a text whilst trying to thread their car down a b road at 100mph, but on a dual carriageway with freely flowing traffic where you can see well into the distance etc it would be fine. thinking about it, 3 seconds is far too much, if you were looking at your phone for that amount of time you shuoldnt even be trying. a glance down at the phone isnt more than 1 second

So given an activity that's dangerous, you think it's fine to make it even more dangerous?

Texting is far worse than talking on a phone, and most people don't even seem to be able to manage that and drive in a reasonable fashion.

You shouldn't be doing it - end of. If it's that important, pull over and sort it out then. Or alternatively if you're really that desperate to get in touch with someone install a handsfree kit and and speak to them.

I hate people who don't pay attention when driving, whether the road is clear or it's a busy city, or if it's a motorway, getting behind a car is potentially dangerous if not done with respect and knowledge.

Changing a CD, being interefered with by your other half, talking on the phone (even on hands free IMO), doing makeup, eating, drinking, smoking, fiddling with sat nav etc... is a distraction. Sure on an empty motorway would be the "safest" time to do it if you are going to drive without due care and attention, however there could be some debris on the road that you don't spot, you could stray lanes and you could get over taken quicker than you notice. Ok I admit I'm being a little excessive in the "lack of concentration/attention" owing to being distracted, but I still firmly believe that there's absolutely no need to fiddle with your phone when driving. Nothing is important enough to warrant it.

i wont even consider speaking on the phone whilst driving, i just cannot do it. if you text, you control whats going on. you can start and stop texting depending on whats going on around you

if youre talking on the phone you have someone on the other end who cannot tell if someone is trying to move into your lane or a roundabout is coming up.

you must be a nutter if you think talking on a mobile whilst driving is less dangerous than typing a text that you can put down at any time

Current phone yes, previous phone which had real keys I still didn't text whilst driving. :)

This is EXACTLY what the advert is getting at, yet some people are still above it.
