Driving

I would love to learn to drive, but the expensive of buying and running a car is Just too much for me while I am still studying.
 
Driving is fun but I hate being told to slow down constantly by my instructor. Speeding is necessary sometimes and its depressing being stuck at 30 when its just not needed.

This. I still go out for utterly pointless drives down nice country roads. No destination, I just drive :/

I'm not a fan of public transport either, my car is important to me.
 
I would give absolutely anything to be able to drive but due to my visual impairment there is no chance. I love cars and given any chance at all on private land to get in the driving seat i'm away.

Having to get the bus to most places that I go I just find it frustrating that for example travelling to Uni I could do within 15 mins by car yet getting the 2 busses or 1 bus and walking the other half of the way takes me an hour. Then there's been times I've went on placement into the countryside and because I had to go into Belfast to get the bus into the country a journey that would have taken me 20 mins took nearly 2 hours because I had to backtrack to go forward! I just love the idea that you can get in the car and go practically anywhere you want.

I have many friends who drive and hate it, some of them haven't even driven since passing their test 3 or 4 years ago! My girlfriend spent nearly 4 years driving around with her granda on a provisional licence. She was more or less ready for her test but just had a few bad habbits to fix and I practically had to force her to take a few proper lessons and put in for her test. Now she absolutely loves driving and couldn't do without the car.
 
It's generally accepted that if you have a fair interest in cars/machines then you'll enjoy driving.

As for visual impairments, laser eye surgery! getting cheaper each year too as well as new technologies to bring your eyes back to new levels although those are a decade or 2 away :p
 
Do it, it's great! especially during the early morning hours say an hour before sunrise and take your camera with you because not only with you be able to have a nice peaceful drive (and think time) but also capture nice sunrises wherever you drive to.

Petrol costs? not a problem, there's no traffic so you just drive easy and will use absolutely minimal fuel.

Well, that's ordinary opinion, everyone goes through that. After a year or so I started sticking to 30mph limits, and less when 30 isn't appropriate.
 
I didn't really like learning to drive (expensive, boring) but being able to drive is great. It's much better to learn early, rather than wait until you really need to, like I did. Driving is a million times better than going on the train

Thought i'd just update this, had my practical test today, failed :(

Thought i was ready but apparently not, i got fair nervous and was so hot and then the examiner stuck the heating on, didn't want to argue. Only got 2 minor's but a serious for not checking all my mirror's on a roundabout and apparently going into a bend a bit too fast but i think he just put that to back up the first one so i couldn't dispute it. Was fair worried about my manoeuvres, had a left reverse and parallel park (and an emergency stop) but didn't even get a minor for them, so one less thing to worry about next time i suppose.
I didnt really expect to pass first time tbh but it's the money im more upset about, just got my student loan and that's going to go so fast now i need to book another test and have more lessons. Bummer :(
How's everyone else getting on who was learning?

Depends from person to person really how quickly you pick it up,

For example I have had 15 hours lessons and have booked my practical test for mid october when I would have had around 25 hours.

First thing you should do is book your theory test and practise using the disk as this is the 1st obstacle out the way,

Its going to cost me around £500 to get through my test if I pass 1st time.
 
Even with free public transport as I'm a student, I will always prefer the car to get somewhere, the only thing that puts me of driving sometimes is payed parking, I outright refuse to pay for parking :mad: ( which is why I use the subway to get to uni).

As fox said, turn on climate control ( or heating & heated seats in the winter :D), set up your favorite music, cruise control when on the motorway, and drive :D. You're dependant on nobody but yourself and the machine...

Beats any public transport **** with a bunch of smelly ****ers and/or being forced to stand as all the seats are taken and be in the vehicle with a bunch or morons playing rubbish hip hop crap from their mobiles.


For 500 quid I can't see why anyone still doesn't want to make his license, the average is about 2 to 3 times that here, some people I know spent 3k getting their license... The minimum ammount of money you can get your license for here is about 600 € which buys you 10ish lessons of 50 minutes and an exam.

I managed to pass my first driving test back in july with 6 minors, though i'll admit that I was lucky.

Basically I had already booked a practical test, but then delayed it to a later date because I still wasn't confident at roundabouts. Ironically when I took the test I didn't have to actually do any roundabouts.

My show/tell me questions were how do I check the power steering is working, and how would I check the brake lights were working. Possibly the two easiest questions they could have asked to be honest but i was hardly going to complain :D

Me. It is an absolutely vile experience. Just an opinion though! I like motorbikes a little more and pushbikes even more!

I also don't find cars remotely interesting.
