DRM

Is your mate somehow retarded? He honestly bought one of the latest PC releases and expected it to play on a Pentium 3 system? Did he not think to read the requirements before purchasing it?

I call shenanigans!

He has aspergers syndrome actually

Interesting topic thats raised a few good points, Its a shock to see that companies are struggling to sell games to the masses, be interesting to see some figures from pre 2000, when games on the PC were quite popular, Like doom 3d and so on.

They're not struggling though. In fact the games industry is one of the few areas weathering this economic storm quite well. It is also likely that you'll still find piracy to be rife but not as well reported on by the media.

Personally, I blame a lack of sales on one thing and that's the disappearance of playable demo's. I was mulling over buying Lost Planet earlier and when I went to do it I noticed I could download the demo. Suffice to say I did not buy the game as it is a horrible console port.

Which has what to do with him expecting GTAIV to play on a Pentium 3, other than 'nothing at all'

Part of his behavior within his ASD is that if he wants something hell buy it, Doesn't matter what the consequence or whether its the right thing, like buying a surf board but he doesnt surf.

Sorry, slightly off topic

You mention demos, I did notice there wasnt as many around either, I expect they dip their feet in both console and PC to try and maximize sales.

GTA4 is so easy to setup and run.Install GFWL & R* and thats it the game auto installs for you anyway. R* even release a no dvd patch after a month so you would not need to keep the DVD in the drive.[/U][/B]
Linky? I have the 1.020 patch and it sure isn't included with that. Would like to reclaim my drive bay!

I'm not a fan of DRM :(

Reason?

Typical example...

I bought RA3 a while back when it came out and wanted to play it on lan with friends and family as a one day thing, but as it has a maximum install of 3 i actually had to get access to an illegal copy just for the day despite actually owning the proper one.

This to me was just ridiculous :(

I remember as a kid i'd arrange lans with friends and we'd generally mostly have the game (like C&C / red alert 1 / quake 1 etc) but we'd play with some other mates who wouldn't have it yet. We'd install it on their pc's for them and play a 5-6 player game in the same house at weekends sometimes, then at a later time they'd more than likely buy the game so they could practice etc. Wheres the harm in that? To me its a million miles away from blatent piracy and i'm finding this DRM stuff really tedious and i actually find its encouraging myself and others to pirate software....

I can see the reasons why they're trying to introduce things like DRM but its hindering the wrong people..as someone has already said..crysis being one of the most downloaded games ever :(

Untrue... That's really what DRM is most effective at preventing - casual piracy. You used to give copies to your mates at a linkup, but now moan about the fact you now can't? Do they all really go and buy a copy afterwards? Honestly? Go and read the excellent article that Crowze posted a link to above, and see if your arguments ring a bell afterwards.

I'd say that people bought games in this way when otherwise they'd have never even known the game existed. This is when games needed a cd to be in when the game first loaded up and we'd have never heard of nocd patches or whatever making the game useless outside the lan situation.

Perhaps you think people shouldn't go round a friends house and play a game on their pc unless they have already bought an official copy? where do you draw the line?

The bigger problem is literally people who never buy any games and almost download every game that comes out just for the sake of it overnight.

I bet i could name 10 games i played round friends on lans which i then bought the following weekend to practice at home so i wouldn't get my arse wooped the following week :p

All this does is bypasses the need to have the DVD in the drive. It still needs to remain activated online.
Hmm no joy with that exe, get the below:

(Was activated with original disc a couple of days ago)

In theory I have nothing against DRM. But pretty much all forms of it's implementation hinder the person that actually buys the game more than anyone that pirates it.

And as long as that continues I'll continue to be against it.

This applies to dvds as well, boy do I hate those bloody unskippable anti-pirarcy ads.

The simple reason for hating a lot of DRM is that it inconveniences people while making exactly zero impact on the problem it's designed to tackle. And then you also get people who use DRM to justify pirating, so DRM actually makes things worse for itself. And somehow, publishers haven't cottoned on to this fact?

That said, I don't hate DRM on principle. Some implementations actually work (Steam is a good example of this) without inconveniencing their users.

Here's food for thought. A computer program is a long binary number stored inside a computer. Legally, you can't copyright a number. So how can you copyright a computer game?

That's one reason I wouldn't pay too much heed to the quantity downloads of pirated games. There are a lot of people downloading stuff because they can. The majority wouldn't have bought them any way. That's not to say piracy isn't a big issue for the PC gaming industry, it is, but I think the sales losses are almost certainly exaggerated when based on these download figures.

Windows live annoys the hell out of me and not just because it thinks I have an xbox and would be interested in the xbox news letter, you'd think that MS could work out that I'm using a PC since I've logged in to windows live.

But mostly I'm annoyed that when playing Fallout 3 if the game crashes I have to restart the game, re log in to Live and then get back to where I was - this would be fine If i wanted to use Live for anything, I don't its just a thing I have to do that gives me no benefit. I know it seems petty to complain about a 30 second task but its a task I've done hundreds of times, it adds up.

Revokes of installs would be fine if they worked, my farcry2 refused to do it online and gave me a code to contact support with, helpfully didn't provide a link/number for support. I found the link on the games site and it doesn't work, so there's an install lost, wonder if it'll work the next time?

Don't you think DRM has something to do with the sales? As said the sales charts dont take into account the e-sales (i.e. Steam, Direct2Drive, etc.) so the sales figures are never accurate.

Just because a game is acclaimed doesn't mean people will buy it. COD4 I thought was superb however both COD4 and Fallout 3 only appeals to a certain percentage of the market. The lack of imagination when producing games (i.e. majority FPS's) is also another reason the sales suffer.

Believe it or not the PC is not the only format that has piracy I think you'll find the PS2 and XBox 360 have massive piracy problems as well.

There will always be piracy unless it's more viable to own the original. Digital Downloads I thought would help massively in this. However companies like Steam charge more to download it than buy in the shop and now you see the reason why people get so frustrated with it. The release dates on games are different depending where you are geographically and then when it is available, chances are, it's crippled with Bugs or DRM if buying off Steam you expect it to be cheaper than going to the shops and it's not. In fact it's vastly more expensive. And anyone who keeps saying it's the manufacturers who tell Steam to price need to look at Valves own products such as The Orange Box, etc. which can be bought for a lot cheaper some can then activated on Steam (????) which is something else I don't get (by get I mean I don't understand why it's cheaper to buy a boxed game and then activate it on Steam).
