Drop in mpg after remap

Some of you may know that I had my 330d remapped a few months ago. Prior to the remap my long term average was around 40mpg. After the remap I am averaging around 37, and sometimes it drops even lower. The kind of driving I do hasnt changed in that time.

Now, everything I have read about remapping leads me to believe that I should expect the same or slightly better mpg.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, its smoking a fair bit more than it did before.

Thanks :)

Who did the remap?

Excessive smoke would indicate unburnt fuel which would tie in with the drop in economy. Could be a poor quality remap, or possibly an issue with the engine which is only now being uncovered by the extra strain being put on it.

Hi there Merlin!

Maybe I put my foot down a little bit more, but even when I dont the economy still sucks!

:p

only good map is a live map on a rolling road, not some generaric one-for-all map like a lot of tuners use.

when i got my focus tdci remapped there was no smoke and mpg increased.

depends on the car, if the engine is the same as every other one with the same or not modifications then an off the shelf can be used, and a live mapping session would cost a lot more and might not make any, or much difference.

black smoke would suggest overfueling, surely you are better off giving whoever remapped the car a ring than asking us lot?

If your using the extra power the remap unlocked then I'd assume your MPG would drop a bit. If your not using the extra power.... why did you get it done in the first place? ;)

Remaps can give better MPG but that mostly depends on the remap...

People want more power but you cant really expect more power and better MPG :P lol The power doesnt come out of thin air ( theres fuel involved too :P )

Im no car mechanic, did gcse car engineering at school and have serviced (and changed a few engines with help etc)... but how on earth does increasing the cars BHP improve MPG??? that makes no sence what so ever, sounds like you should have got one of those piggy back resistors LOL...

I think some people experience an improved fuel economy because the re-map suits their driving style thus being more economic.

Remember that around this time of year the colder / damp air can cause a drop in fuel economy too. I lose about 30 - 40 miles from a tank of petrol over the winter :) (Having the lights / heater etc probably doesn't help either)

I thought it aided in fuel delivery in a slight way hence 1-2 mpg better, others have said it can also lower mpg because of the improved performance.

not in diesels tho, Bhp is not as important as the amount of low down torque that a remap releases
lower torque means lower revs hence the suggestion that drivers may get better mpg

If your car's engine is in good nick, then I am certainly sure its the map. A selection of companies just use generic maps which just overfuels. Depsite their customer service, I recommend ChippedUK.

Yeah but to get more torque it has to burn more fuel, you cant take the same engine and get an increase in performance without using more energy (which comes from the fuel).

I'd not really be concerned, you got it remapped for more performance I'd assume so be glad you can boot it and still get over 30mpg, your luckier than most performance car owners!
