arrrrrrgggggghhhhhh

Sounds like your surgery receptionist likes to think shes the gatekeeper. Just tell her you want an emergency appointment and phone first thing if your ill and getting nowhere.

Won't they still have emergency appointments? Mine does, it's like a 5 minute appointment just after 5pm, so it's pretty short, but usually they can see you that day.

If you won't still be ill in 3 weeks, you almost certainly don't need to see the doctor to start with.

or you could end up seriously ill since your not feeling well now and you want to seek professional medical advice. It's a bit late when you have waited 3 weeks to find that out..

Haha, i know the feeling.
I have a knee injury, nothing life threatening (that i know) so called up my Docs which i havnt done in years.

(after 4 hours of calling from opening until lunch 34 calls to be precise)

Can i book an appointment please?

Of course sir, when are you wanting?

As soon as possible please?

Okay, actually i cant book you in, i have nothing for 2 weeks and the appoints after that have not been released yet so you will need to call back next week.

But ive just spent hours trying to get through....!

Try call back tomorrow for an emergency appointment, lines are open from 8.

Yes i know this as ive been trying since 8!!!

Sorry sir, thank you and bye.....*hangs up*

Luckily i work on the Service desk for the surgeries in my area so know some of the staff and managed to get booked in but still its a joke at times.
I only ever call if i need advice or am actually injured and to be told 3 weeks time is when they can put me in! No thanks, and ill be damned if im spending 7 hours in Bradfords AnE!

My surgery is the same, it's a nightmare getting appointments so I usually give up and accept that I'll either be better or dead by the time the appointment would have come around.

Local village surgery for the win...

Me: Hi I am Tom can I have an appt please.
Them: Sure when would you like one?
Me: Today as late as possible.
Them: Dr Smith at 4:30
Me: Perfect thanks.

HA! Mind you I have had 3 appts in 3 years!

Yes, I totally beleive this is an accurate transcript of the phone call. If it ever happened.

My old doctors used to be exactly the same as this. My new doctor on the other hand has a triage service. You call them and tell them your ill, they take your number and within about 20 minutes a doctor has called you back. You explain what the issue is and they either give you advise over the phone or give you an appointment for that day to come in and see them.

He's obviously exaggerating but mine the other day was something like:

Me: "Hello, I'd like to make an appointment with Dr XYZ please"
Receptionist: "I'm afraid we're fully booked up and don't have anything for about 3 weeks"
Me: "OK Can I see someone else then?"
Receptionist: "You can see Dr ABC on [date in 2.5 weeks time]"
Me: "Hrm, any chance of anything sooner? I have [symptoms] and it's really driving me insane"
Receptionist: "You can try calling back tomorrow between 1 and 2 to get a shorter notice appt"
Me: "OK, I'll try that then"

Cue me trying in the advised time for the next 2 days without any luck, so I gave up.

My Doctor & the surgery & receptionists are Awesome, You must be using a rubbish one so change it/them/him/her.

I get the feeling that my local surgery is heavily oversubscribed in all honesty. It normally takes 15 mins+ to get through on the phone. The problem is that whenever I've had to see my doctor for anything serious, he has been absolutely brilliant, so I'm reluctant to change.

If my surgery/Dr is busy they do what's called a Call back where the Doc will ring you later in the day & see what's what. If you need to see him he'll slip you in.
What does my head in is the Chemists & sitting with all the sick people. :p

At mine there are appointments that can be made 2 weeks in advance, appointments that can be made if you call first thing and then you can have the doctor call you and assert ain what the issue is over the phone and give advice or give you an emergency appointment for later that day. I have had a couple of times where I have called first thing , been put in the telephone queue and by time you get through there are no appointments so normally get the doc to call me...

It's a bloody silly system but something like this is at most surgeries now unfortunately.. :(

Nothing but praise for my surgery, they have two sites, one each side of the city.

Usually can get an appointment in a few days.
