Dual Core Gaming

Quoted for Truth

I was having problems in Need for Speed, BF2, Unreal Tournament and a few other older games. Did the first of the 2 above fixes, everything works fine now.

Havent checked the third one, where can I find that file?
It is in the root of your system drive, most like C: you need to make sure that you have turned off the 'Hide protected operating files' from your explorer options first or you won't see it. To be honest I found that after installing the latest AMD drivers and then applying the MS patch that this line was already added so I didn't need to do anything. Be very careful editing your boot.ini though, if you make a mistake the chances are XP will no longer boot so take care.

hmmm I personally didnt do any of the registry tweaks, only install the hotfix, fixed all the problems I was having.
I found that just applying the patch fixed most of my problems except for on EQ2, I was having problems with getting disconnected all the time when zoning, upon the advise of the SOE CSR tech support peeps I did the registry tweak and found the disconnecting problems in EQ2 went away :) If yours is working fine without the registry tweak then I would leave it as it is. To be honest I didn't fully understand what the tweak does, it seems the technet article is saying it disables some of the performance state behaviour of the patch, all to complicated for me though, I was just happy it worked whatever it does.

I am running my opteron 170 duel core procsser and in oblivion the game never goes over 30% usage over the two cores, even tried enabling duel core in the oblivion ini didn't help, its not like its running bad it very playable, just can't understand why it uses so little processing power, I though it was processor limited, anyone else finding oblivion does the same to them.

I know its weird all my other games max it out at about 50%, with it going over to 62% when windows overhead kicks in.

I don't think theres a single game yet that I've tried that runs my cpu at full load, which is great as it doesn't get that hot when running games, anyone know of any games that will use a cpu to its full potential?

The duel core wasn't brought for gaming thou, mainly for rendering my 3d animation work.

I tryed looking for that Hotfix and it said you have to contact customer support, is there not just somewhere you can download it from??

The main 2 that comes to mind for me are:

GTA San Andreas - Runs fast until you install the AMD driver
Beyond Good or Evil - Random scenes and cutscenes run out of sync even with the AMD driver sometimes fixes if you force the game to run on one core.

UT99 sometimes plays up for me....
Mainly when I have just been running a DX9 game and then play it, everything runs at super speed. A reboot sorts it but it isn't ideal.

I force 6xAA and 16xAF and run it at 1600x1200, not sure if that makes any difference though...

2). Install the MS hotfix (if your XP SP2) as per technet article: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=896256 remembering to do the registry tweaks outlined in the article.

3). Check your boot.ini has the /usepmtimer at the end of the [operating system] line that boots your system

1. Installed

2. I have installed the hotfix (I used the one found Here). Is this the same as the one linked here ? http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=896256
It didn't fix my problem so I check the boot.ini and it did not have the /usepmtimer setting, bit wary of changing this though. Am I using the right hotfix? Was to lazy to phone up MS and request it...

edit: OK I'm must have just been a complete numpty. Have installed both patches again and I now have the /usepmtimer in my boot.ini. Am gonna try it on bf2 now...
