Yeah if it's fine then there's no need to get messing around, my mate was running BF fine, tried to do those tweaks to see if he got any better performance, seems to have faffed up a bit now
It is in the root of your system drive, most like C: you need to make sure that you have turned off the 'Hide protected operating files' from your explorer options first or you won't see it. To be honest I found that after installing the latest AMD drivers and then applying the MS patch that this line was already added so I didn't need to do anything. Be very careful editing your boot.ini though, if you make a mistake the chances are XP will no longer boot so take care.PinkFloyd said:Quoted for Truth
I was having problems in Need for Speed, BF2, Unreal Tournament and a few other older games. Did the first of the 2 above fixes, everything works fine now.
Havent checked the third one, where can I find that file?
I found that just applying the patch fixed most of my problems except for on EQ2, I was having problems with getting disconnected all the time when zoning, upon the advise of the SOE CSR tech support peeps I did the registry tweak and found the disconnecting problems in EQ2 went away If yours is working fine without the registry tweak then I would leave it as it is. To be honest I didn't fully understand what the tweak does, it seems the technet article is saying it disables some of the performance state behaviour of the patch, all to complicated for me though, I was just happy it worked whatever it does.PinkFloyd said:hmmm I personally didnt do any of the registry tweaks, only install the hotfix, fixed all the problems I was having.

Mainly when I have just been running a DX9 game and then play it, everything runs at super speed. A reboot sorts it but it isn't ideal.

2). Install the MS hotfix (if your XP SP2) as per technet article: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=896256 remembering to do the registry tweaks outlined in the article.
3). Check your boot.ini has the /usepmtimer at the end of the [operating system] line that boots your system
