Dubai Dubai

What? What cant you spend it on, precisely?

More of a cultural thing. I doubt dubai has can compare to say tokyo in terms of theatres, museums, sports teams, clubs to join etc. Its about actually having stuff to do other than work.

This which I've seen people use a lot,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_city#Globalization_and_World_Cities_studies

ranks dubai quite low, even though it has a bias towards economic significance. Even within its group, if you ignore economic criteria, it can't compare to Berlin, Barcelona etc.

Here are the criteria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_city#Selected_criteria

Uh huh. You've never been, have you?

Only been for a couple of days where I was able to just take in a few attractions, so basically can't judge from firsthand experience. But I'm pretty certain it will be a far worse 3 year experience than Seoul or Tokyo.

Tokyo, the 2nd most expensive city for an expatriate and Seoul the 5th most expensive city for an expatriate, both with over 4,000 people per square km ... almost 4 times as crowded as New York, and you're basing this statement on not first hand experience of any of these cities, but on an expectation of culture. Tokyo's culture goes back to 1457, although the beginning of modern Tokyo only really came around in 1603. Seoul, which has been a capital city since 1394 and Dubai's culture. It's a boom town, that didn't experience any growth until the late 1960's. That's quite some difference.

There's plenty to do in Dubai, and just because some bloke you spoke to said he didn't think he'd enjoy himself, not really a good enough reason to start discouraging people from major life decisions.

And hell, even if there wasn't anything to do in Dubai, at least he'd be saving money, rather than spending every last penny he earned on a tiny apartment in a city that's 400% more crowded than New York ;)

I didn't discourage him not to go. Teaching in dubai is better than a lot of jobs. I know that people on these programs do initially have a choice of cities to apply for. Hence I was effectively telling him to look at other cities as well.

It doesn't matter if you are negative or positive, better than nothing.
I be working as an IT tech, with someone who's moving there this year. From my research, the school is 'acceptable', has british teachers etc.

I'm not in it for the money tbh, but the whole experience, 3 year contract is some commitment...compared to a job I got offered here for £22k in a data center

EDIT: I wouldn't hit that :)

I can't imagine it to be a place where you can go partying and have a great time. :p

You obviously have never been then...it's an awesome place to go partying.

I worked there for a good part of February and thought it was awesome, very laid back and chilling:)

What is the appeal of Dubai? Genuine question.
Whenever people are asked what is good about the place the replies are always extremely vague.
Is the scenery excellent? Is there lots of history? Magnificent architecture? Lots of activities?

There is no scenery, or history or even architecture to be honest. It has some fun activities you can partake in but the main appeal of Dubai is the luxury and opulence, if you want to be pampered then it's the place to go.

Also early on the massive appeal was obviously the business opportunities however that has slowed down massively now. Many people are struggling and that's what we found when we went out there.

Dubai is a new money kind of place, everything is big and bold, it'll be cracking place to go when its finished:p

I love it tho, imo its quite chilled for a Muslim country, walking round the malls was quite interesting, some would have you believe its filled with blokes in white robes with women, completely covered, walking 10ft behind them. Its not the case ime. Theres plenty to do for westerners, its just not out in the open.

Its a country built on immigration, I went to Deira and every single labourer was foreign, generally its not a cheap place to live, but once you get used to living there you do find the cheaper places to go and eat etc. Heat is the killer tho, I went in April, and it was 36c, I lost a stone in 2 weeks:eek: put it all back on tho:p

Have you thought about China? 2 of my friends did their English First year teach there and lived liked kings. They have stupid offers on beers such as "buy 5, get 7 free" e.t.c :D

Just a shame the arse has fallen out of the property market quite spectacularly there.

The Dubai bubble has well and truely burst.

lol

The whole luxury etc doesn't actually attract me, I'm more interested in the whole experience... I be working as a junior IT Technician with an 'administrator' (whos moving there like me).

Got a mate who works out there and he is having the time of his life so I'm sure you'll love it.

Having seen some of the buildings that they are putting up, I would certainly like to visit. Not sure I would work there though - bit too hot for my liking.

In before the Muslim bashers.

My god man, you're obsessed with the race/religion aspect of everything! You seem to assume that everyone is a racist. Save to say that the mods are more than capable of dealing with any racism if it decides to raise it's ugly head without you having to presume that there will be any. I think you have some sort of complex.

Good day.
