Right then, my personal contract is due a replacement in 6 days (obviously I can wait longer if its worthwhile), and already have an iPhone 4 through work.

I've not really got much of a clue when it comes to what the latest smartphones currently are, I know of the Desire and that the Desire HD is on the horizon, but that might not be imminent.

Is there anything else I should be looking at? Is there anything else due to be released soon?

Pretty much narrowed it down to the Nexus One and the HTC Desire, the Nexus is far prettier IMO (and ships with 2.2), but the desire is the slightly better phone?

Confused.

Almost exactly the same phones apart from a few differences. The main ones include; Nexus has noise cancellation and a traditional track ball (instead of the Desires optical). Plus.....

The Desire lacks the triband HSDPA/WCDMA of the Nexus One, making do with just dualband 900/2100. That means it’s not much use – at least in terms of high-speed cellular connectivity – outside of Europe and Asia; take the Desire to the US and you’ll be stuck using quadband EDGE or hunting for WiFi hotspots. HTC told us that dropping active noise cancellation was a price consideration, but that since it would only really affect voice dictation – which is currently exclusive to the Nexus One anyway – it wouldn’t make much of a difference to Desire owners. The Desire does have more RAM – 576MB versus the Nexus One’s 512MB – and come with a bigger, 8GB microSD card in the box (the Nexus One comes with 4GB), and arguably they’ll make more of a day to day impact than noise reduction. The Nexus One has Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, compared to the Desire’s 2.1+EDR, though it’s unlikely to make much of a difference generally.

The Nexus will receive Android updates before the Desire.

surely the main difference to point out is that the nexus comes with an AMOLED screen whereas the desire currently comes with LED

Looking like the Nexus is the one to take.

Is there anything about to be released? Everything I can find always compares the Nexus/Desire to the iPhone 3GS, which to me means that they are a generation behind?

But its an HTC phone at the end of the day. Someone must have cooked a ROM that does it?

Nexus one is google made phone with google os?
HTC desire with sense UI is google os with HTC added sense ui added to it.

Using 2.2 android modified rom on my HTC desire with sense ui.

There are plenty of ROMs available for the Nexus, most of which would probably be a better option than Sense which is somewhat of a battery whore.

If you want it then go for it, but the deciding factor for me would be price. Last i checked the Desire was up to £100 cheaper SIM Free/Unlocked than the Desire.

Price isn't a concern as it will be an upgrade from my carrier (vodafone). Yes I know it will either be branded or have a branded ROM, but I don't have to pay for it, so I don't actually care.

All the phones I've mentioned so far are £0.

I'm fairly sure that you can get ROMs with Sense for the Nexus One, although imo LauncherPro > Sense...

Personally if it was my money I'd probably get the Nexus One over the Desire, for the reasons mentioned so far (mainly AMOLED Vs SLCD, but also update support both official and Cyanogenmod (although he's now doing the Desire))

Although I'd also consider the Samsung Galaxy S as well as it has abetter cpu/gpu, in fact I am thinking of getting one soon-ish, but waiting for Cyanogenmod support for it first...

I'll never entertain the thought of the Samsung. I despise everything samsung have ever made in the mobile devices space, and the fact that its just trying to be an iPhone, well, meh.

Don't talk crap i got HTC desire an it's AMOLED also
your point is ? read my post again.

I think he means current/recent stock. They stopped shipping with AMOLED not long ago.
thanks

yes i did. hence the CURRENTLY bit:p

some people are too quick to insult people and should actually read posts before they make themselves look dumb

You could get Sense UI on a Nexus with a custom ROM but as has been said....that's just one of the reasons the Desire is a lesser phone, the Sense overlay is a resource hog and makes the phone feel more sluggish.

You'd be shooting yourself in the foot if you put it on a Nexus.

But in the same way - you could put a 'stock' ROM on your Desire to get rid of the Sense overlay.

I'm unsure which you actually think I should get ;)
