DVI > HDMI

Will you want the tv to display sound via the 3.5mm jack or will you put this through speakers.

Slightly different question; but if my gfx card has an HDMI out and my 22" moniter has an HDMI in - could I use a HDMI cable over a DVI one? Any benefits? Thanks.

Yea I'm just looking to play sound through the tv speakers.

Chris, HDMI carries sound signal as well as the video so you could do away with extra speakers and use the monitor's, but external speakers will probably be better quality.

Yes you can, no benefits far as I am aware, what GPU are you using as not all do sound over HDMI.

I would check with the manual - you may already done that you can choose a external source rather than the TV looking for sound input through the HDMI cable.

Well, I've tried HDMI to HDMI through my 5850 and can still run sound through my computer speakers if I want to. I imagine I can do the same with my 4870 in the other system, but until I get the DVI to HDMI cable I can't test that.

Anybody have any experience with this?

Chris,

In order to obtain sound through your TV speakers you would need a jack to 2xphono cable, you'd connect the jack to your Sound Card output and the 2xphono connectors to your red and white inputs on your TV. Your DVI-HDMI cable wouldn't carry sound to your TV because your GPU doesn't carry sound just picture.

To answer your second question. DVI-D is a better connector then HDMI, DVI-D is capable of carriieng resolutions of up to 2560 × 1600 while a single HDMI which is what most people have is only capable of up to 1080. It depends on your monitor, I mean, if your monitor is 1920x1080 or less then you probably won't see a difference but I'd stick with DVI-D anyway.

Not true, the 5850 and 4870 can carry sound via DVI -> HDMI, you just need to make sure you set the card as the default sound device.

Cheers bud! Whats the likelihood of a monitor (this one specifically) coming with a DVI cable? Thinking of ordering it as its cheap as chips!

Will I be able to connect my computer to my tv via a DVI > HDMI cable and put the sound through a 3.5mm jack?

Yes, no problem at all, I have exactly the same setup with the DVI output from a satellite receiver to a TV and the audion is carried by a separate set of phono leads. You can get an audio lead that is a single 3.5mm jack for the PC end and splits to L/R audio for the TV end.

You 100% about that Orc? I didn't think DVI could carry sound at all.

I had my 4870 connect to my 32" TV via DVI -> HDMI, and after setting the card as my default sound device, sound could be heard from the TV. Most mordern GPUs can have the DVI port output sound when using a DVI -> HDMI adapter.

Cable is always better. You lose signal/connectivity when you put an adaptor in anything, so you lose picture or audio quality every time you break the cable.
