Dwarf Fortress 0.34.01

Might be a silly question but will this be playable on my Atom based netbook or is it really that cpu intensive?

This is how I play:

DFex

The abtly named 'Lazy Newb Pack' contains a plethora of apps in one launcher. It also allows the selection of several pre-installed tilesets. Unfortunately it'll be a little while until it's updated to the new version but in the interim there's no harm trying the last version which is very stable.

How do you set that up, is there a guide?

I do love Dwarf Fortress but the guy who makes it (Tard Adams) refuses to make it playable.
The UI is awful to the point of being a chore to play.

Sad really, some of the stuff the dwarves do is completely hilarious with a bit of imagination.

So on a scale of 1 to EvE, how steep is the learning curve?

Blasts that scale to pieces! :p Tbh the main part is overcoming the UI and getting your head around what to do and how to keep everyone alive and happy.

Love the concept and love to play, but I still can't get very far!

The game only uses 1 core, but after a few months into the game (like an hour) it was unplayable-ey slow on my 1.4GHz laptop.

I love playing this, but I continually make silly mistakes :) but it's a learning curve and pretty fun after a few waves of migrants.

The new version of the Lazy Newb Pack is out to support the new Release of DF. It's really easy to use. First, install a graphics set from the menu (you can change later if you like), then load DF, then load the apps you require. You can then resize everything to your liking.

[Note:Stonesense, the isometric viewer in my screenie above has not yet been updated to the new version and is missing from this version of the LNP]

Thanks, will give it a try!

I could never get into Dwarf Fortress and i've played some very hard fustrating games in my time, what annoys me is I want to click on options. Not F for this and B for that :/

I had a problem with that, but I guess I started playing on my laptop so I hated my mouse pad anyway so I got used to it fast :p

They just keep making it harder!

I managed to lose a steady stream of dwarfs to a vampire this time around... only managed two days (and a relatively small fort) before the FUN happened.

I've never played but the 'lazy newb pack' makes the game way more accessible and interesting, that's the only thing that has made me want to play this game.

Also 0.34.10 a few days ago...

Only a few bug fixes, but we now have minecarts, new hauling, and new drop rates for mining.

Argh vampires! Can they be disabled? I know it's a cowards way out but they get bloomin' annoying. Especially when they suck the life out of your master engraver when trying to fully engrave a massive dining room

Vampires are great! Immortal switch pullers and managers.

It's such a hassle trying to single them out though. Especially when you thought you had the right dwarf but you realise they had starved to death in that sealed up office and now you have 2 bodies in your garbage pile that appeared there mysteriously :(

0.34.11 released earlier!

Major bug fixes
(*) Stopped crash from forbidden or otherwise lost containers in haul jobs
(*) Stopped crash from naming routes when no routes are present
(*) Stopped crash from renaming non-squads in the military screen
(*) Stopped adventurer from turning into an underground creature when solid ground for placement couldn't be found
(*) Stopped children from having missing/damaged clothing thoughts

Other bug fixes/tweaks
(*) Stopped dwarves from walling/isolating themselves oftentimes
(*) Worker chooses the closest tile instead of preferring tile at the top left of each designation job location (they don't use path distance, nor does this impact global behavior like choosing which designation job is picked overall)
(*) Removed ramps near natural waterfalls
(*) Added confirmation for burrow deletion
(*) Added generic armor options (like those in the default uniforms)
(*) Stopped haulers from wandering in loops in certain circumstances
(*) Stopped removed constructions from injuring dwarves
(*) Stopped dwarves from looping between civ/squad equipment if they can't follow their orders
(*) Allowed dwarves to ride/push minecarts even when they don't have walking access to destination
(*) Made dwarves equip items based on clothing layering order (there can still be conflicts if some items are already worn)
(*) Made dwarves eat from backpacks/drink from waterskins earlier
(*) Made armor objects count for missing clothing thoughts
(*) Made dwarves drop equipment extra equipment more promptly when they are hungry/thirsty
(*) Stopped empty bags from popping out of minecarts
(*) Cleared kill orders when completed (they can take a few extra clicks to clear up)
(*) Non-fire-immune creatures will dodge out of hot squares
(*) Fixed extra flashing _ problem when naming routes
(*) Random seeds can now be typed up to the proper number of characters
(*) Auto-assign new baby animals to mother's pasture/pond
(*) Stopped certain game actions from advancing when designations are placed
(*) Added indication of items which are already assigned in specific item assignment on military screen
(*) Stopped objects from being forbidden on enemy deaths if they are associated to fort military equipment
(*) Made command line world gen exit without forcing a key press confirmation
(*) Made command line understand quotes so that parameters with spaces in their names can be used (doesn't seem to work on linux/osx, not sure how to fix)
