DX10 - overhyped for some?

Still stands as the same though.

DX10 or dx9 has nothing to do with it. Vista/xp has nothing to do with it.

The only possible thing really is maybe he has different drivers to you, but it wouldn't change the visuals that much.

So.. he has either naff monitor with bad setup, or bad pc setup, or something else such as awful quality cable to the monitor. Why don't you go check it out for him?

You haven't said what his native res on the 22" is? If it is 1280 then is is frankly a cheapo monitor (or really old) and no wonder he says it sucks.

Easy fix....DX10 for XP.

Then you do not have to choose between DX10 for games, and all your other apps working (WITHOUT spending 1000's buying the vista versions)

Like you said, dual boot.
I'm sure there's been plenty of discussions about why DX10 on XP was not viable.

Either way, I'm good, I'll happily use Vista, I genuinely like it.

Can't understand any of the setups, a 8800gt for a 1024x768 setup i mean, wtf,

whats wrong with the 8800gt? sure its not that powerful these days but its got enough grunt to give a good gaming experience in crysis at 1024x768 and most other games he can have high levels of AA and AF enabled at that rez.
sure a more powerful gfx card would do the better job of allowing him to use even more AA but then he has to spend more money.

I don't think he was saying the cards no good for that rez, but why get such a powerfull card for a low rez, i could be wrong but thats how i would have taken it.

No one can win here can they?

I have a LAN room with 9 PCs connected right now, I also have a couple of others ready to get setup if need be... I have these PCs setup with as good as as I can afford... They are all running off Second hand Monitors with the exception of my own, and 3 of my kids PCs - those are TFT.

The CRT monitors can do 1024x768 and yes a couple can also do 1280x1024, but I am keeping them all about the same spec.

Now when I say that I have an X800 I get slagged off for using such a low-end card. When I say that I also have a 2x6800GT PC I get laughed at about that too... I also have X700, X1800XT, X1900XT, 8800GT, 2x8800GTS(SLI), 8800GTS ( Single ), and a few others too, and they are all running 1024x868 or 1280x1024 for my kids.

Now, all this time I get slagged off, for using old cards but when I use a good card I get slagged off again for having a crappy monitor!!! - I cannot win.

He is not using xp he is using xp x64 that is not 7 years old it is more like 4/5 years:p

Not quite 4 even... It was marginally over 3 years that XP64 has been out!

Given that Vista is over 1 year now, means that there isnt all that much between XP64 and Vista at all, so no vista user can possibly say that XP64 is too old without sounding stupid.

Well you're wasting your money on graphics cards then.

Im wondering just how stupid that remark is, but I will try to explain instead!

...

No im not.

Im upgrading the PCs all the time.

Right now, all my LAN PCS play any game that Id care to throw at them in very high quality and without any glitches of any kind.

Why is that a waste?

At 1024x768 and plenty of older cards can too at that res, thats why you are wasting your money. I guess for the system in your rig you have a big monitor....

Hang on a minute... Are you assuming that all my monitors are only capable of 1024x768?

No, the kids Monitors are running 1280x1024, and both mine are capable of 1600x1200 and they are NOT wide ones. Its only the other PCs that have old Monitors that are on 1024x768 and thats only because I have not yet upgraded the screens... Considering that they only get used when the kids have their mates round, or I have more than 3 of mine that these PCs ever get used, so no, I wont be in any rush to upgrade, however, with using half decent VGA Cards in there, we can at least play all the latest games at a very high quality and framerate.

Also, not all the PCs have 8800GT's either, I stil have older graphics, I think 6600GT, 6800GT, X800, X800GTO2@850, X1800XT X1900XT, so how is it, that I am wasting money?

I have the best I can get away with by the wife, the kids have my older gear, and the rest of the LAN PCs get the kids older stuff, it all goes down the line.

I reckon it looks worse because of the monitors. Try plugging his monitor in your LAN pc and it'll probably look rubbish as well.

Pfft, DX9 is good enough for me, I refuse to leave XP, moan moan moan. DX10 isn't even good anyway, look at Crysis, it's just the same. Crysis is the game on which I base all conclusions!

Devil may Cry 4 in DX10, that game is very impressive... and with my 8800GTX @621/1620/1080 :)

like people above said, DX10 is getting more and more used now and looks great compaired to dx9

Its all down to how the developer uses it for me. Games like Lost Planet, Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's Creed & BioShock run fine in Dx10, but other games like Company of Heroes, Hellgate: London and Gears of War either cripple performance or do nothing (and its especially lame when games default to it just because you have the hardware to do so). I havent seen a single thing in Dx10 thats worth using at the moment, i just want to play games with as less hassle as possible, i dont want any performance crippling crap.

Yes, we need to see his Monitor and mine together.

I am taking my baby down to his gaff sometime in the next couple of days, hopefully tomorrow and put them next to each other.

Only thing we can do.
