DX10 - overhyped for some?

Problem is DX10.1 shows a good speed boost also to the improved graphics on DX10.0 which is a shame we cant use it due to NVidia pretty much preventing it! However it is nice to see that Blizzard, Sega and EA are looking to implement DX10.1 in forthcoming titles which is a good call for them and for ATi of course ;)

Well, I have now done a number of titles and I feel that I must take back what I have said... But... Not fully.

From what I have seen, and this does not in any way represent anything near the true scale of it all, but from what I have seen myself, DirectX 10 really can be visually better than DX9

As for speed, I feel that with the speed of todays hardware, trying to moan about the speed is perhaps a ridiculous one... Sure, I do feel that DX10 is slower, but then perhaps its also a smoother game-play too.

There are some things that I have noticed that DX10 is supposed to bring out, and thats things like light shining through windows... I have seen tons of screenshots on this and so its somethign that I was looking for heavily and I have to say that the screenshots I have seen in Magazines and on the internet, seem to be BS. There is little or no difference between DX9 and DX10 on that, and whe nyou are getting your head kicked in by a hail of bullets you really dont give a stuff about half the junk you are supposed to.

Water on the other hand can be a completely different thing altogether and while in DX9 its impossible to tell the difference between that and real Water, DX10 makes it even more real ( If thats possible )

Some games have really stood out however. Crysis was NOT a game that I would base DX10 on as much as many seem to, but personally, I found Company Of Heroes a better choice for that, maybe because crysis is such a crappy game that relied on the hype to get its sales and I liked Company of Heroes makes me lean to that.

All in all, I am going to stick with Vista for the time being... I still have issues with it, and the longest I haev managed to keep it on my main PC is only a mumf but this is a new Mobo now, so perhaps...

Yes DX10 can have better 'visuals', but it won't give better quality as such, just more effects or improved effects.

I doubt most developers are using DX10 to it's full potential either as they want maximum game coverage, so most games will be dx9 + dx10 afterthought.
