e2160 Vs e6600 - a Melbourne720 Review

Thanks guys, much appreciated

Great review old chap, makes you wonder if they're going to do the same cache-cutting magic with the Quads too.. :)

Thanks Richdog, and what a good idea! Q2160, 256kB cache per core, I'd buy one :D

Nice thread.
My last build has started to die prematurely I'm certain because of having my cpu overclocked too far, decreasing it's life span. My next build I don't fancy overclocking so I can keep it for as long as possible, 3 years+ maybe, so your concept I should probably keep away from? Or does intel chip's keep a good life expectancy on stable overclocks ?

Are you sure it's your CPU dying? One solution would be to overclock cheap CPUs, but change them every 6-12 months. I didn't lose much on buying then selling my e2160, another good reason to get the cheaper CPUs, as they depreciate less.

Well thanks again for your review of these 2160's Melbourne as I just bought (yesterday) for my Father in Law...

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
2GB 6400 Crucial
E2160 CPU
8600 Graphics

I only had time to build it up and test total stability at 2700mhz and it was fine. In fact it carried on clocking higher and running great. However as he does not live too close to me I knew that the emphasis was to leave him with a totally stable machine as he would not be able to sort the problems out for himself.

For a CPU that cost just over £50 I am amazed at how well that it clocks, it was running very cool under the Scyth Ninja (and quiet) that we fitted. The performance of his system was superb - especially for him as he was upgrading from a AMD 1800 with 512mb RAM and a 4200Ti graphics card.

As the 6400 Crucial was on offer (£70) the price difference was negligible from the 5300 type, and I have always been a fan of Crucial's support and returns policy.

Great CPU for its price, performance and capability to be overclocked with relative ease :)

The only problem I had was size of the cooler relative to the memory slots and his case, but that worked out fine. Also I wish that Gigabyte would have included more useable USB ports. The three USB internal headers are great but, for me, the external SATA backplate is not as useful as a backplate with extra USB ports on it.

Excellent build there Vimes, you've hit upon the 3 basic benefits of the e2160

1. They're cheap.
2. Once clocked to 3GHz+ they're similar in performance to most other core 2 duos.
3. They're so cheap they leave more money for faster other components.

I currently have a 2.8 pentium d 775 socket at 2.8 with 1.5 gig of ram would i see at difference between this and a e2140/2160 leaving the new chip at stock?

By the way cracking review melbourne720

Thanks, and yes you would. An stock e2160 is a fare bit faster, but the real trick is to overclock this chip as then it goes like stink.

Seriously, aftermarket cooler, set the voltage to 1.4 and the FSB to 340 = instant speed (do it step by step just to be safe). But do clock these chips, that's why they are so good.

My pentium D 3.2 ghz cpu has been **** on from a great height by the e2160 @ stock 1.8ghz... was just faster all round, less lag in de-compressing etc... and clocked up to 2.8ghz it just wipes the floor with the pentium D in benchamrk after benchmark.

What were your benchmark scores?

I'm interested as I am getting my 2160 on Saturday :D

I also have a Pentium D sat @ 3.6Ghz and am interested to see how much it screams performance over the Presler's.

Hi neal i have never run any bench mark scores for my current chip as it is at stock so i will do some before i fit the e2160, ill do them at stock just to show what the difference is. Is there any bench marks you would like me to run?

nice review mate, superPI seems take the biggest hit for me (e6400 vs e6420) and the difference in supreme commander isn't really n oticeable, especially b ecause almost everyone i play against has a really pants pc and runs at about -7 for the whole games

hi guys, 1st post here!.

i have a e2140, p5k premium and 2gb corsair 6400.

clocked this up to 3.2ghz, a 100% overclock and it was 4 hours stable on orthos.
running a 1.38v which is fairly low too!.

its very very good, cant see the point in buying another cpu, spend the difference on a p5k

Good stuff mate, I hold the same opinion.

Unless you want 4Ghz or quad.

Pop them an email and link to the review ;)

Dear Intel,

I have been testing your Pentium e2160 processor, and was amazed by it's ability to operate beyond specifications. It's ability to match the performance of much more expensive CPUs puts it in the pantheon of bargain processors. Please feel free to read my results:-

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17751381

Would it be at all possible for you to release to me your next bargain CPU, as this would allow me to let many of my fellow enthusiasts know of the capabilities and direction of Intel's next generation line up!

All the best, and keep making bargain performance CPUs.

regards,

Melbourne720

Will post updates, if any :D

Thanks for the review! :)

Getting my E2160 tomorrow, only 69 Euro(!!!), I wonder how good they are compared to the new E8xxx series that come out in January. If they aren't much better then I'm gonna stay with the E2160.
I once bought a Celly 700mhz and swore to NEVER AGAIN buy a budget CPU. But this, this is actually the first time I'm pretty confident getting a budget CPU was the right choice. :D
