Edit: Title should read E2160 overclock...
Hey can anyone help im confused.

I have an Asrock MATX 945G-DVI with a Core 2 Duo E2160.
Now, I know the Asrock isn't a good overclocker because of the limited 9x multiplier (?) but I would like to overclock my E2160 a bit.

The thing is, I forgot how the memory relates to the FSB and multiplier when clocking the CPU. I have geil PC2 DDR 6400 800mhz ram.

Can anyone tell me some safe settings I could start on, and how the FSB effects my ram? I'm hoping to get something like 2.8 ghz out of the CPU (a 1ghz clock) but I do not want to break the RAM.

Thanks!

P.s. can anyone tell me the best tool for overclocking Nvidia cards, too? I am used to ATI Tray tools for ATI but have since switched to an 8800 GTS 320

Thanks just downloaded it.

Just need to figure out how to safely overclock my CPU now :P

Hi, have you read the beginners guide to overclocking?

I think the main limiting factor on your motherboard will be the FSB. Raising the FSB affects the CPU speed and RAM speed. The main thing to make sure of, is make sure you only overclock one thing at a time. IE When you raise the FSB, make sure your memory speed stays below 800mhz, so you are only really overclocking the CPU to start with.

Your memory is rated at 800mhz, so if you ran a 1:1 divider, you could go up to 400mhz FSB before the RAM would be overclocked (400mhz FSB, x2 because of DDR = 800mhz on the RAM).

Hope that makes sense, just read the stickies is my advice, and take your time. Keep an eye on temperatures, and you can't go wrong really.

Good luck!

I cannot for the life of me get the FSB to go any further than 220x9 (the multiplier is locked at 9)

The Asrock 945G-DVI does not seem to have a Vcore option in the bios.

Not only that, but my Ram is Geil 1GB PC2-6400 800Mhz ram and the Asrock 945G-DVI motherboard only supports 533/667 ram - would this be a problem?

The ram options in the bios are only to set it at either DDR400,533,667.

Why cant I get it to POST past 220?

The CPU is a E2160.

micro atx motherboard generally do not clock very well, and the board you have is one of the more notorious boards for not clocking. I would have tghought you would get more than 220 out of it though. most of the asrock budget boards i have used will do at least 250 -270mhz fsb...
