E3 2013

MS have a new method to stop all these pesky ports to PC

Its called XBox One Cloud Computing. Dead Rising 3 for instance uses the XB1 Cloud to generate & manage background level data streaming as well as game saves & other player & game world data. Quantum Break (new Remedy XB1 exclusive game which looks horrible) uses the same tech. This is the perfect DRM as well because the XB1 exclusive games use it & are built around this massive Cloud network of 300,000 servers MS say it will have when running at full capacity.

Its highly unlikely any XB1 exclusives arrive on another platform (even Win8) when MS are co-publishing all the games themselves alongside the publisher to share the risk on XB1 & gain full control.

Even if MS said yes port to PC the devs would have a huge recoding job to perform & many of these games could not work the same as there is no PC Cloud equivalent to draw on with the same computational power!

PC will still get some DX9 level games next gen with DX11 features like it does now but few games will look much different as not many companies will spend the high budgets to make a PC specific hardware heavy game as the highend PC market is tiny.

On an unrelated idea, imagine it could go a step beyound just the 'cloud' but more in to the relams of the 'grid' ie, all online xbox's create their own distributed grid for processing data and graphics!

"Cloud computing" aka a huge waste of time and money and a whole load of lies.
(When talking about games)
I agree but MS appear to be doing this to seize market share not enrich gaming it will work to some extent if there are any must own XB1 exclusives you simply must buy their crappy over price under specced console

Anything is possible but I think MS will be using their 300,000 servers to manage piracy & prevent ports to other platforms then as a sideline generate a little of the actual game world content. A 50GB Bluray could contain a massive game world already so its probably low level computational stuff & user management then as a byproduct perfect DRM.

It probably gets way too complex for developers if they suddenly need to troubleshoot XB1 Cloud related QA & or bandwidth issues knowing MS this is all about control the sheer arrogance of their upper management never ceases to amaze

But also explains why MS have been so apathetic towards PC gamers for years they must have known several years ago about this massive Cloud based array now they can control & prevent PC ports which to them assumes you & I will need to buy this under specced poxy little midget PC but I think most PC gamers will shun it & just see what happens with the PS4 ports & DX11 only PC exclusives (you can count them on 1 hand right now methinks :().

To be honest, MS have created XBox exclusives for all their consoles. They don't need the cloud to do that, and it's no surprise that there is more of the same this time around.

It annoys me that such a fuss is kicked up over sony allowing us to trade use sell games in any way we see fit, yet everyone just sheeps up when it comes to pc steam etc.I bet 90% of these games that are said to be on pc are out 1 year later on pc or a pc version totally scrapped.

Some of them will, some wont, somebody posted in one of the other threads in the console forum a list of exclusives for all the platforms and the pc had a huge amount more than any of the consoles. I tend to have a console and a PC to game on (will be ps4 this time) so there is next to nothing I miss out on.

As for steam I don't want then to be forced to make games sellable, as it may change the pricing. Got Lego lord of the rings for £5 yesterday, find me a console version for that and ill eat my head. I will be pre-purchasing Rome tw II this week, for 29.99 on steam, find me a pre order top of its class next gen console title for that and ill eat my head. I haven't spent more than 30 notes on a PC game and I have a library more than big enough on steam, origin and uplay. I paid 25 quid for farcry 1,2, and 3 a few months after it was released.

When I can buy lots and lots of games for between £2 and £30 I don't care if I can't sell them.

Its not more of the same this time around though that is what is taking PC gamers time to understand as its not exactly clear!

The Xbox One 1 Cloud comprises 300,000 servers these are being used to generate game world data, save player info, compute game world data & manage all of this as well as stream ingame content.

MS are co-publishing & co-funding these 15 XB1 exclusives so they control the porting or not decisions but it does not matter as MS are actively getting devs to use this new XB1 Cloud which eliminates any porting being possible even if MS allowed it which is unlikely now anyway.

Reading between the lines it seems thats most of the multiplatform games are like current ones so the only big difference will be more DX11 features on PC ports but even that is up in the air when Intel/Nvidia are not part of the new consoles we are now relying on AMD to compensate & provide the dev tools MS/Intel/Nvidia created for 360/PS3 ports which enabled so many games to be ported across. Not sure how helpful AMD will be to Intel/Nvidia owners as they have new hardware to sell :(

If AMD do not deliver then PC gaming will be stuck in limbo & not make the jump to nextgen unless PC exclusive titles start getting funded.

This year will be ok (apart from the exclusives we cannot get) as there are already multiplatform games in the pipeline targeting Q3 but 2014 is the big question mark. The big worry is Xbox 360 ports provided most of the code to PC ports from 2005-2012 as MS made a lot of dev tools to assist but are unlikely to do anything to help now as they must have seen how easy it became to port to PC from 360 & that is no longer in their interests to assist with as GFWL is retired & Win 8 is a disaster it does not leave them anyway to make any money from this.

To me it looks like the XB1 Cloud will effectively lockout PC ports of games that use that tech. So we are reliant on AMD stepping up to compensate for no Nvidia/MS/Intel dev tools

Just, hypothetically, why couldnt a Windows 8 PC (or any other device for that matter) play a game hosted in the XB1 cloud? surely thats the point of cloud enabled services, to access any program/data anywhere?

What would stop MS creating an XBOX app or client that works in much the same way as the dashboard on an xbox? They already have started to with the Metro games. Then in theory they can release games to PC with no porting required, which means less expensive to release on PC, which means quicker turn arounds and less bugs - good thing?

I get they want a walled-garden, so to speak, but since Windows and XBOX share similar ground, it wouldnt be a massive stretch of the imagination that they could potentially start offering cloud-based XBOX games to Windows PC's?

I agree but MS upper management would have to actually care about PC gaming  they are some of the most arrogant executives in business.

PC gamers are below Windows Phone users in their eyes after the failures of GFWL, Win 8 & MS F2P offerings I doubt anything else will change now when they have a new console to sell which is really an ITX PC & already fighting an uphill battle against PS4!

I don't think I'll be buying a console, though. At least it's a showing the future potential of games, or is it the fact that the future is NOW? :O

*hugs PC*

Microsoft should stick to making crap desktop software and half decent office software and leave gaming to everyone else, its blatantly obvious all they care about is how much cash they can con outta peoples pockets.

This latest move will probably shake even the most die hard MS fanbois, ive already had a few of my friends who are MS Diehards proclaim they are moving to PS4 when its released. MS are moving the final nail into place on their gaming coffin i feel, and Xbox1 is the hammer to drive it home.

I switched to Playstation a few years back after being an Xbox owner for many years, and i would never go back to Xbox, and as people point out the new console platforms are the closest yet to mainstream PC's, making porting ideal for games, but MS are far too shortsighted and narrowminded, i hope Sony pick up on this fact and start doing PC ports of all their PS exclusive titles (Uncharted etc) and wave 2 fingers at MS.
