So it is your opinion that a £9k car is as likely to be a trouble free, well looked after mint example as a £15k example of the same car?

Sigh...

Quite
Can you even argue what is wrong with a BMW with full BMWSH bar the last one? I would say it have been pritty well maintained. Well worth a test drive for £9k, they really arent that expensive anymore since the far surperior new M5

Of course becuase the fact its been serviced once every 15k miles means it's invincible and isnt covered in scratches, dinks, marks, dents a dodgy interior o a mechanically unsympathetic owner

You dont buy £9k M5's unless you are very brave or very stupid, end of story.

It is perhaps course you paid around that price for your 530 sport you think its unexceptable? I doubt some-one that pays BMW for a service every "15k" miles is "unsympathetic" to his/her motor. If you check out the car on autotrader the outside looks very clean indeed, its cetainly worth a call/test drive, you may save a couple of grand.

A sympathetic owner would have it serviced every 10K not when a computer on the dash tells him, sooner if used hard. I had my M3's serviced at 10K and my GT3 around the same, and I have just booked my RS4 in for a service even though the computer tells me its got 8K to go...

No, it's becuase I like and know something about M5's that I think that sort of price is more hassle than its worth. It's the bottom of the barrel, one of the cheapest cars in the country and considerably less than other cars of the same age and mileage. As with everything in life, there will be a reason for it sprice.

The current owner is unlikely to have done that - you'll note the last service was NOT at a BMW dealer. Given the service intervals it could be anything up to 40k miles since that car last saw a BMW dealer - which at the mileage/year that car has covered could be 3 years or more!

Everything looks clean on Autotrader and in photos. I could post you photographs of my first car and it looks immaculate - it had a dent in the rear wing, loads of scratches, and generally looked a bit shabby.

I agree with this, I always get the oil changed half way between the long life services. Oil looks very dark on mine and its saying 8k till the next service but getting a oil change tomorrow. I do think these long life service intervals are not all they are cut out to be even with good oil. After all the computer is only guessing what condition the oil is in and when it needs a service based on a few parameters.

A car with extra oil changes carried out is going to be one that is looked after very well IMHO.

i have to agree with fox here, 9k for an m5 is way too cheap, it will definately be the runt of the family, looks are nothing when considering cars of this type, times are desperate but people that own these cars wont be in a hurry to shift them that cheap unless they're up the creek without a paddle

Well i would say the best advice i can give you is find a good local independant BMW garage. When you find a car you like, regardless of it's price get it checked over by someone who knows these cars.

As for the Jag vs M5 debate, One thing i will say is don't make the mistake of assuming that just because Jag's have a bit of a pipe and slippers image that there cars are old teck, the XJR is of alu construction and is very hi teck in it's engineering, it's one of the lightest cars in it's class it's retro styling might hark back to the past but under the skin is as modern as they come and is a very good car.

The current XJ (X350 series) uses aluminium construction. But given the budget that the OP specified he wouldn't be getting a current XJR - it'd be one of the X300/308 cars, which aren't quite as light :)
