E39 M5 advice

I agree with pretty much everything Fox has said here. Having run a 540i for a number of years in the past, I know that the running costs of these cars can be astronomical if you buy a bad one.
My advice is the same as it always is. Buy the very best one you can afford but leave some money in the pot for any unforseen issues.
Many M5s are (sadly) heading in to the "banger" territory having been owned by scrotes who can't afford to service them. And there's a saying that goes with performance bangers: "It may seem like supercar performance for banger money, but it comes with all the banger problems for supercar money"

Indeed, you have hit the jackpot if you find a 1 owner from new car, or a car that has had 2 owners, the last one who had bought it when it was worth a good £35-40k or so.

Because once you own a car like this it makes everything else seem so... Rubbish? You wont want to go back.
There's a lot of cheap cars that do that. It took me ages to get over my old Sapph Cossie when I were a boyo.

i plan to keep it 3 years at least so want a fairly tidy one, looked at another one today up for £10k and i can see why it was cheaper, it wasnt a nail by any standards but had scuffs and a few scrapes and a bit more wear than the one i looked at yesterday, had vanos rattle to that didnt go away, you dont wanna lift the bonnet on an M5 and it sounds like a diesel. i will pass on this one for sure but it was a nice car just not great.

Unless I can afford to buy a decent spec'ed fast BMW I will never buy a 2nd hand performance BMW again, too much hastle and stress for a car which only got used on the weekend.

The whole point of a performance BMW is that it's as good as compromise as you can get really... it's meant to be used all the time.

If it's for weekend use only you sacrifice the comfort and get something like an Elise.

my thoughts exactly and the M5 IS an everyday performance car , no point buying it if its gonna be locked away , its such an involved drive (i only went on a half hour test drive) and has so many sides, great at cruising, docile in town, straight line performance, handling the twistys. cant wait to own one now, just need to check a few more out and make my mind up :D

To echo what many others have said, the M5 is a wonderful car, but running costs can be eyewatering, and it gets worse if something goes wrong. Avoid the cheap M5's, they are cheap for a reason, and it's usually not too good.

If you can find a good one, and justify the running costs, then you're laughing all the way home, if you buy a bad one, you're crying all the way to the bank.

3 pages on a BMW, how did this ever happen?

Because you failed by not adjusting the settings to see more posts on one page? Only page 2 for me ;)

Back on topic....

The M5 is an excellent everyday car and locking it away is a crime. Take your time finding the right one, test drive as many as possible - see if there is anyone you know who has a good one who'll let you have a drive. As has been said, there are many many 'ragged, bagged and shagged' examples available.
