When I built my machine some time ago, I got the e6300 oem which means it did not include the heat sink and fan. So I ordered the Zalman CNPS9500-AT CPU Cooler and used it right from the start.

Now here's my problem. I never really bothered checking the temps of my cpu until recently (I used the latest version of speedfan). My cpu is overclocked to 2.8 and it idles around 52-54 on stock volts! Reaches around 66 on load. I figured this is too high knowing that C2Ds run cooler and knowing that my Zalman cooler of one of the best out there.

So I took out the cooler and cleaned it and resit the thing (lots of dust have gathered cos I had it for quite some time now). Now my cpu idles at 49. So I decided to restore my cpu clock back to original (@1.86) and it idles at 42. I cant figure out whats wrong.

Any ideas? My friend's E6750 @ stock speeds with stock cooling idles around 22-24.
 
did you clean the CPU and replace with fresh TIM after you dismounted the cooler?


Use core temp to check your temps as it measures directly off the CPU (DT) DIE

What was your friend using to check their temps, and how much thermal paste did you use and what type.

My case has 1 fan on the front and 2 fans on the side.

Core temp is showing the roughly the same temp as speedfan. Sorry but what do you mean by TIM? Did u mean thermal paste?

My friend used speedfan as well. I used the Artic Silver 5. what I did was I put a small amount, (like 2 drops of water) and spread it all over the top of the cpu with my finger. Or is that wrong?

Just a question though, is the arctic cleaner necessary? or can I just wipe it off with a cloth? Also, how often should I be changing the thermal paste?

No, use some vodka and cotton buds if you do not have a TIM cleaner. It will remove the old TIM completely from the heat sink preparing it for a fresh layer.

Once applied you do not need to do regular changes of TIM. One application is all you need

When you originally applied the thermal paste did you use your bare finger to spread the TIM on the CPU?

I did use my finger, but wrapped my finger with cling film before spreading it :(

Ok, re clean the CPU and Fan heat sink using cotton buds and vodka (alcohol base) Keep cleaning both until the cotton buds are showing clean ie no more visible residue and leave for 10 minutes. Allows total evaporation of the alcohol.

Re- spread Arctic silver the size of a grain of rice on the CPU (In the middle) Spread evenly use a credit/ atm card or a stanley blade. Ensure your Heat sink is firmly re-attached. Use core temp for temp readings. Hopefully the temps will be low. Remember though the Arctic needs time to embed as the silver melts and fills the crevices allowing thermal heat transfer.

Apply the Arctic to your CPU only and not the cooler

Im having simular problems. Same fan and CPU on a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3

Currently 400mhz x7 = 2.8ghz, Core volts 1.300 (below stock of 1.325)

Core temp - 47 idle, 57 full load
Speed fan - 37 idle, 47 load, 10c below core temp, MOBO shows same

I have reseated the fan many times, cleaned with vodka before reapplying TIM, room ambient temp is 70-75c

Case has 120mm front intake and back vent, the air coming out is cool-warm. Hard drives all stay around 30c as does the case inside.

Should I lower the volts more to try and lower the temps ?
