Hi all. Core temp is reporting my E6600 as running at 71c under load. My question is how reliable is core temp and does 71c seem a bit excessive? I have tried using intel tat but it won't run on my MSI board.
Thanks in advance

That is high for E6600, coretemp is very reliable for reading temps.
What heatsink are you using and paste, I would see if it is correctly installed

Hi thanks for the reply. I'm using the scythe ninja and AS5. It's a bit worrying as the ambient is only around 23c. I have checked HSF and it does seem to be seated correctly! Would you guys reccommend returning everything to stock?

By the way my idle temps are

Core 0 55c
Core 1 56c

How did you apply the thermal paste, did you use the method recommended by Arctic Silver.

Although your chip isn't gonna explode from too much heat I can safely say that is a lot of room for improvement in your temps.

I have a few ideas why your temps are higher than they should be:

  1. Bad fitting of heatsink
  2. Bad application of TIM
  3. Heatsink may need lapping
  4. CPU may need lapping
  5. Not enough airflow in the case
I would be interested to know how the TIM looks after you remove the heatsink? you will be able to tell if it has been making good contact or not by looking at the paste on the bottom of the heatsink . . .

My Heatsink had a bad 'concave' base and was hardly making any good contact with the centre of the chip where its hottest! I had also used the 'spread' method instead of the 'blob' and as u can see above the 'spread' method has its pitfalls . . .

Apart from having a buckled heatsink my rear case fans had stopped working without me knowing, all this led to very hot load temps during the summer but all fixed now.

Well guys I've reseated the HSF after applying AS5 as per instructions. and i'm now idling around 66c and 84c under load. Obviously I'm seriously worried as I don't want to kill my CPU. I have noticed that my Vcore in the bios is set at 1.36v, where as I thought the E6600 should be around 1.25v. However vcore can't be altered on this board. Any ideas??

OK guys. I've now lapped my HSF and applied more AS5 as per instructions. My temps are now 55c idle and 68c under load at 2.8ghz stock volts. This still seems high to me. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

My e6400 with a titan vanessa type-l hetsink which is a bit worse than the ninja (according to the reveiws). At 3.2 with 1.33V (real) Vcore load temp is 55/55 and idle with speedstep disengaged idle 31 degrees ish in a warm room.

Those temps seem too high for stock volts.

Still sounds hot?

Are you using a fan or running this passive btw?

Hi thanks for the reply. I'm using the fan that came with scythe. ATM I've got it running full speed along with a rear exhaust fan and 2 fans at the front drawing air in and my idle temps are 56c and 74c load on both cores. I'm baffled!!

I'd be very happy with that if I could achieve it :(

I've got a n E6600 with a ninja in a push-pull config and with tat on 100% it won't go over 53 c, the ambient is about 22 c. that is all stock though.

Sounds way too high to me. My E6600 at 3Ghz never goes over 45c (Idles at around 30c). Either the airflow in your case is nonexistent or the HSF is incorrectley seated. My ultra-120 seemed a bit convex to me but it doesn't seem to hinder its cooling capability.
