Earthquake?

when you live in a warzone and your house is shaking from the impact of bombs and cruise missiles and your wondering if your house could be next, its cute to read about people bragging about the size of their earth quakes.

... Yeah I did deliberately word that to say how I understand why people in the UK would find it strange and unsettling. There's nothing cool about earthquakes.

I didn't notice anything, even checked back on the CCTV to see if there was any vibration visible, one camera is on a lamppost and it didn't move at all from what I could see.

:D Glad to see that hasnt been forgotten. I slept through this quake yet again :o

No such thing as earth quakes in the UK. They're known as earth tremors. We had one in 1990 in Shrewsbury when I was back in primary school.

But hey ho, even Wiki thinks the Shrewsbury one was an earth quake.

Be interesting to know what happened with this latest one - I'm wondering though its a bit of a stretch if its related to the massive ongoing activity off Iceland at the moment - while the magnitude is fairly moderate there have been over 2000 earthquakes in the swarm with I think nearly 40 at last count above 3 with some signs of the stresses having a knock on effect north and south so possible it causing things to settle a bit further out - it seems to be a bit unknown if it is tectonic or volcanic or a mixture of both despite being on a fault zone and seems to be moving from deep down to shallower depth but no measurable signs of magma movement currently.

Yes :-) Remember that the Richter scale is logarithmic on a scale of 10, so that a 6.0 quake is 10 times as bad as 5.0 quake, and a 7.0 quake is 100 times as bad as a 5.0 quake. So the 5.1 that we had Shrewsbury in 1990 was fairly insignificant. I remember the classroom shook for about 10 seconds and maybe a few books came off the shelves. We had to leave the building like it was a fire drill, but school resumed ok on the following day. The local radio was in hysterics, people saying "go make yourself a nice cuppa tea with 3 sugars to calm yourselves down". Nowadays, the DJ would say "go make yourself a nice cuppa tea with 1 sugar but beware of diabetes type II" :p
