Eating for ketosis...

Okay well I've had to break my diet slightly, apart from killer headaches, and feeling quite ill for a few days I almost collapsed while out shopping... I'm not quitting on it, just adjusting it a little my goal is still to lose 8 stone... and I'm determined I'm going to do it!

It does take a while to adjust, you are forcing your body to use fat as a fuel source as opposed to carbs, you've probably burnt carbs for energy all of your life. I'm no expert, but I do pretty much permanently use fat as my main fuel source and have done so for a few years, my advice is to take it slowly and lower the carbs gradually.

Some low glycemic carbs such as sweet potato or brown rice may help the transition and minimize the unpleasant side effects your experiencing. Drink plenty of fresh water too.

well I'm consuming about 3 litres of water a day, Thank's smit, it's good to get knowledgable advice...

I've just had a steak, 50g of boiled white rice( I know browns better but dont have any in atm) a medium mushroom and a small handfull of spinach, hoping that is'nt to bad...

Very interested in this thread.

My hardest thing is what to have for breakfast as I am used to either porridge or weetabix.

Any suggestions? I'm also trying to keep the fat content low.

I would be very grateful (and I'm sure OP will as well) if all of you that have done this diet could list what you ate for breakfast, lunch & dinner :)

This isn't keto if your keeping fat content low.

Keto is all about cutting carbs to very low but fats high.

Scrambled Eggs was my choice on a keto diet for breakfast.

It's hard but it certainly works.

Oh and one tip, maybe buy some fibre supplements........

Your backside will thank you :p

Well I have to say I feel much better today after having some carbs although I'm still gonna keep it as minimalised as I can... It's a long way too 15 stone for me afterall, Now I feel better I'm gonna start adding in the cardio!

i an no expert but just offer some advice from few month ago. I tried to suddenly change my way of living and start Ketosis and gym without even knowing the basics and found it very difficult to stick to and lost motivation quickly

I have enjoyed it a lot more and found it a lot easier to keep motivation up by just eating a proper diet and getting a good routine going of gym 3x week and CV 4x week.

Just an idea as others have mentioned may be it will be better to start off with just a good diet with not to many cards then once you have got into a routine and started losing weight then go on to Ketosis?

Thank's Lynchy I appreciate all advice from people with experience... Things are going well and I feel a lot better.... Just looking forward to seeing the results! :)

I think he means that if you showed that to the general public their head would melt at the thought of all that unhealthy artery clogging brain exploding evil fat

lol!:D Yes that's exactly what I mean. It's a total misconception that sat fats are unhealthy imo.

:)
I love you both :D

Don't forget to eat some greens - or at least take a greens drink (I know I know it's a sup :o). A bag of spinach a day won't do much damage for carb intake! :)
This too. I'm all over the spinach at the moment, so tasty!

Do any of you check for ketosis? I'm just interested if you see if it causes high enough level of blood ketones for you to be able to measure them in your urine. I'm guessing the level of ketosis is likely to small for there to be a at home determinable amount.

Blood ketones would be a better measure but atm it costs about £2 a test (before buying the machine) so unlikely anyone is doing that. Urine testing is cheaper but I'm not sure you'd be able to measure anything as the amount would be fairly small.

Well a lot of folk do use a glucose monitor, i personally don't bother as i can tell when i hit there.

For one i feel crappy for several hours until my body adjusts, plus i get that whole metallic tase in my mouth albeit subtle, takes me around 2-3 days, i seem to get there quicker since adding mct oil to my macros.

Glucose monitors don't tell you if you are in ketosis, well technically there is 1 that does but most don't. More than likely you are thinking of ketostix, they are urine dip sticks that measure urine ketone levels.

I always wondered about the metallic taste, I could understand if you got the taste of ketone on your breath but not a metallic one. I'm guessing the result might be from fat / protein being converted to glucose rather than the ketosis itself.

Could be, but like i said i don't get it for at least 2 days after switching back as im on a ckd diet to keep my gains, working well to boot.

No when i hit keto.

Anyway can't wait to hit the gym later, im on my refeed so will puff right up once asgt is swimming in me system.

Naturally being friday evening it'll be rammed with bunnies!! :D

Gym Bunnies indeed.... heheh good to know someone has their priorities in order! :)

Indeed ;)

Looked great today, but felt crap and had a really bad session, ah the joys of keto.

Anyway you're not on your own bud, just remember that when you feel like sacking it all in. :)

If you need inspiration i was once 19st odd, dropped to 13st 2lb currently 15st 3lb and looking great.

Not sure about the feeling part, anyway slow and steady wins the race.

Coconut milk is a good one for keto, you can add it to veggies with curry powder or other spices to make a good sauce.

Another is just full fat beef mince with mushrooms/spinach/cheese and ketchup! Simple, high calorie and protein and damn tasty.
