Eating out - for just a few mouthfuls

Not really. 1/3rd of the global pollution is generated by just 20 firms. So blaming you and I for the problem, and giving us sloppy paper straws - isn't really scratching any itch at all.

Oh, and the paper straws are non-recyclable.

I agree but there’s no harm in cutting the 4% either. I appreciate it’s all futile but something is better than nothing. We can’t all sit here drinking from a new plastic bottle for every drink we consume. Well, we can, but it’s a bit stupid...

but it’s a bit stupid...
agreed, until you consider perhaps people miss the obvious bigger issue, which is drinking from a new plastic bottle when they have coke and other soft drinks, as those soft drinks have a lot of work involved just to get them made, and then if instead of bottled soft drinks, an alternative that sticks is bottled water, it's not as bad as people often make out.

imagine a situatoin.

i'm sat drinking water from a new plastic bottle. you're sat drinking coke from a new plastic bottle. someone tells me i'm stupid for drinking that water, and then says nothing to the coke drinker.

now that is stupid.

It is stupid and you are stupid for doing so.
Coke doesn’t come out of taps does it? And I can’t imagine people drink litres of coke a day. If they do, they are also stupid...

I used to work with a super smart guy but I really formed a different image of him when we were in the breakfast queue and he explained he has a bottle of Coke every morning with his breaky :(

Just to be clear as well, 4% is the total plastic derived from Oil in the entirety of Europe. It is absolutely miniscule compared the 87% literally burnt up and turned into nothing but death. (i.e. plastics can be recycled quite easily).

i know it's an imagined situation but who would ever do that?! surely the water drinker would just tell them to **** off

You don’t think it’s stupid to open new bottles water every day, at home... the stuff literally comes out the tap... I don’t think they even do that in countries where the water is of poor quality.

so should we as individuals not do anything to reduce pollution? unless i'm mistaken that appears to be what you are saying - apologies if that's not the case
You've been debating with dowie too long
it's not possible to debate with dowie!!

Can't say I've noticed this. I quite often don't finish my main especially if we go for curry and we have poppadoms and starters first but always take the leftovers home.

generally speaking yes, but i'm talking about the the imagined scenario where the water drinker is being accosted while the coke drinker isn't.

Of course - as individuals we can do our bit - but distracting an entire conglomerate such as McDs on a vanity project that totally misses the outcome is a total and utter waste of resources.

Resources in this case = people, executive sponsorship, investment. There are only so many - and accusing each other of ending the world for drinking bottled water (case in point above) is absolute BS and such a huge waste of time.

An entire step change is needed, it is just a simple case of the economics behind it being too disruptive. 86% of our oil is being burnt!

I'll stop now as I'm starting to sound like Scam in a 7am Sainsburys rage at the clouds.

Requirement of a step change doesn’t excuse stupid behaviour though. I’m not saying it’s going to change the world. I guess it depends on your principles. After posting on here for long enough it’s clear to see that people live by very different principles.

What I am saying is that your anger is misdirected. Moaning at your colleague for having bottled water is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It is almost like a propaganda phase where the oil companies have made you mad at your friends, loved ones, colleagues, random strangers - rather than mad at the fact 20 individuals (the 20 CEOs) of the 20 largest polluters can be directly addressed.

I’m not angry in the slightest. I’m not sure why you keep repeating things that I’ve already told you I agree with. Are you the one who’s angered?

Going back to principles. Saying thank you and please to people doesn’t change anything, but I still say them anyway. I could happily throw litter on the floor and cite India and China, but I don’t.

why did you add the at home bit? and ignore the not at home bit?

maybe you forgot, but other people spend more waking hours outside than they stay at home.

We discussed not using your fridge water dispenser? Either way this pointless conversation has gone on for long enough.
