Hi all, i am taking the Girlfriend to Edinburgh for the weekend in May, and i am looking for suggestions for places to eat, we are staying in Grassmarket at the Apex hotel so places near there would be great.

I have been before but have only ventured into the Town centre and royal mile, not been futher down than that.

Oink. Can't really get much more handy for where you're staying if you're looking for a nearby lunch.

Are you looking for somewhere special or every day sort of places?

Totally depends what you want mate.

I would reccomend Castle Terrace for relaxed michelin star food. Gardeners Kitchen for something a bit different (absolute bargain for £25pp for food!). My favourite pub is Cafe Royal http://www.caferoyaledinburgh.co.uk/ and we always have to go in for at least a pint when we are in town.

If you want to go somewhere brand new try http://www.scranandscallie.com/ .

If you like seafood, go to Ondine as it has been getting some very good reviews recently: http://www.ondinerestaurant.co.uk/

I ate at http://www.mussel-inn.com/ for some seafood (well, mussels) when I was there. Seemed pretty popular and was good food.

Also ate at http://www.thaiorchid.uk.com/contact.php one night, was very quiet but it had snowed pretty heavily and not many people were about.

Ate here for Mexican one night: http://mariachi-restaurant.co.uk/ they had some salsa dancing lessons going on at the time.

Taken from Ahleckz's thread in GD, there are some other good suggestions there too:

Had a lovely meal at La Maison Blu a few years back, great deep fried Hagis starter, top quality steak main and a chocolate desert to die for they practically had to roll me out of the place!

At the more expensive end the Witchery is always worth visiting with the other half especially in the secret garden part as its a really nice setting. Its not silly expensive but a bit more special.

At the expensive end Martin Wishart is very good and is probably the best food I've had in Edinburgh but it does have Michelin star prices.

At the lower end Browns is a safe bet.

I have eaten at Wishart's, Kitchin, Castle Terrace & Number One.

I would rate Wishart's the worst by a way, actually. The service was dreadfully overbearing, and the food not as inventive or intelligent than the others. You will also pay a considerable amount more at Wishart's.

The Kitchin is widely known to be the 'best' cooking in Edinburgh, but I prefered Castle Terrace as it is more relaxed and younger atmosphere

Strange as I thought the food and service was fantastic, I didn't mention the Kitchin as I've never been there (can never get a table when i want one) but it does get rated as the best restaurant in Edinburgh. I've been to 2-1-2-1-2 and thought that was a let down.
