Bought a Sky router from an ebay seller who has 100% positive feedback.
It was listed as New and only opened to check contents.
I've just picked it up from the post office and opened it and to my dismay there are scratches all over the top of the router and the powerpack has clearly been opened or more likely used as the cable is not how it would be tied up as new. I paid via paypal. What would be the best course of action?

Yeah i can see what you're all saying but i specifically bought a new router as i wanted a router in new condition. If i wanted a used scratched up router i would have bid for one listed as used and paid less for it as they sell for less on ebay.

I can understand the frustration - you bought what you thought was a brand new item and it has turned out not to be.
It is just cosmetic however and on a device that doesn't really matter.

You could, if you really wanted to contact the seller, explain that there is no way this is brand new and see if he's wiling to give you a part refund - maybe £5 or so.

Other than that - just use it.

I'd contact the seller, I had exactly the same situation with an AV amp the guy was perfectly understanding and we did a deal where by he refunded me what I believed to be an acceptable part of the price.

The point isn't wether it works or not it's that you will have paid a premium for an A1 conditioned item had you know it was scratched etc you would have no doubt bid a lower amount.

If the seller refuses to compromise take photo's and start a dispute on ebay he has not sent what you paid for and shouldn't be alowed to get away with it.

Thanks for the latest, more helpful replies. I've contacted the seller giving him two options.

1) Full refund including my postage returning it to him
2) A partial refund which would amount to me paying the typical price for a used one.

Let's see what happens!!

As long as it works i would be ok with it, but it also depends how much you payed for it. At least it was not one of those silly listings where people list an item that is brand new and then in the description it says "Brand new but only used for 2 days" etc lmao makes me laugh.

It looks like the router has not been looked after carefully. I've had routers for years and they still look brand new but i would never list them as being new if i were to sell them.

It was listed as:

Condition: New

Description:
sky netgear wireless router dg834gt 108mbps this is a new item just opened the box to check everything is in it comes complete with all the filters (3) all the cables and disc with instructions.

I've never used ebay, but if it was described as new, it should be as new. New products do not have scratches all over them. Whether it's worth the hassle to get a refund, I don't know.

How much did you pay for the router? I've been looking to upgrade to those 108mbps DG834GT's for a while and id say the average price for one that is brand new & only opened to check contents is around £40 i'd say but there are a lot of them on there which are being on sale from people who have got them from sky.

As I said you're perfectly within your rights to ask for a full refund and if the seller refuses you can raise it with ebay who will almost certainly find in your favour.

The number of people in this thread saying you should just accept it is unbelievable I'm sure they'd all be the first to take something back to dixons if it was all scratched and this is no different your bought something described as new so it should be new and imaculate.

I got it for £16. I've been watching them for a week or two on ebay and new ones have been going for £25 buy it now and i've seen new ones sell from £13 including delivery. Used ones, however, have been selling for £6 inc upwards usually depending on when the auction is ending. However, it's not about the price i paid. Whether i paid £2 or £200, i bid for a new item which i expected to be in new condition and it is in far from new condition therefore the item was missold.

I checked to see if it was working before i made the proposal to the seller and it accepts the sky default username/password.

No I mean the username/password to access the actual broadband, not the router itself. By default these are not accessible in the firmware but can be extracted using a certain URL that you enter in your browser.

eitherway if your reflashing it to the default manufacturers firmware it doesnt really matter.
