Ebola scaremongering?

Worst bit is when real fear kicks in, it'll cripple our economy, and it's already starting as the markets are getting spooked. Also reports that Nigeria are covering up there cases.

Depends how the food is treated beforehand. I could be wrong but a lot of food is irradiated. Not much bacteria survives this and everything I can find says ebola curls up and dies.

(Well gamma irradiation. Can't find info on x Ray or electron beam versions)

I'm pretty sure there would soon be a vaccine if it threatened a developed country, it's surprising what can be achieved when needed

that is probably true

and quite sad really :(

we are really quite selfish (the richer countries)

only thing is though - can a vaccine come quick enough - one should have been developed years ago (but as you said - not in their interest - not enough money in it)

btw reading the above - should we be concerned about imported food etc ?

"officially" imported food shouldn't be an issue. If you like bush meat from under the counter at your local corner shop though.....you might have an issue.

I have to say I was in near tears watching the Ebola Channel 4 or BBC documentary the other day

having loved ones carted off to a treatment (containment) facility - its horrible - and very scary for the patient too I can't imagine being greeted by people in full Hazmat dress

I'd rather that than risking infecting my loved ones to be honest.

Nice to see Fox News being sensible for once & trying to calm the 'fear' fire that papers/news are fanning for those sensational headlines & reactions, both in the US and around the world.

Caution and sensible measures are enough, tackling and helping the african countries affected is whats most important here.

You do realise that if an infected person sneezed and held there hand to there nose and then opened a door and then you opened the same door you could get it? Even if you opened the same door upto 4 days after they opened it?

If it's uncontrollable were looking at a large reduction in the human population. ~50-70% going by the mortality rate.

However it could be much more controllable in a country like ours due to the majority not believing western medicine created ebola. We also have much better medical equipment and staff so the mortality rate could be much lower.

On the flip side if too many people catch it the NHS will be overrun and run out of beds. Staff will become sick through lack of training/kit so less people to treat the infected. Also just because we're not mistrusting of western medicine doesn't mean the majority aren't thick and as such would help to spread the virus through panic or fear.

Who realistically knows .

Much more controllable ? Except all the nurses & doctors will become infected. or the ones that don't, the heck if they're showing up for work! Besides which we do not have enough containment wards.. Yes for a few here and there, but when it becomes thousands, then what ?

Close those DAMN borders now ! Work on a vaccine, and if one can't be found, then sorry but its gonna get awfully hot one late day in West Africa in way of mushroom cloud.

Humanity / civilization is at risk here.

Once its out its out and you can't go putting the cat back in the bag. No-one knows if a vaccine is even possible.. It could literally take yrs.

If the infection rates of medical staff remain the same, if it did hit the uk hard we'd either see medical staff strike or we'd lose roughly 5% of media staff vs infected people (so far 5% of all ebola deaths are medical staff I hear )

drastic but completely appropriate!

The guy in Texas with the green shirt, how long did he have when he was confirmed and then his death?

The whole of USA only has 22 biocontainment hospital beds properly setup to treat ebola. 22.

If there are more cases than that the plan is basically to attempt to keep patients hydrated in makeshift isolation rooms until beds free up. In other words its not any more sophisticated than Africa. Also there is no real "plan", the hospitals come up with their own. Only 4 hospitals really know what they are doing.

Status from a friends Facebook update.

Great ebola.
Shoulda quarantined the whole country! They already infected the world with aids!
That's where we should propose an airstrike, guns on the borders!
Its not harsh.
I just dont see why the western community should die from a decease that broke out 7,110.0 miles away!
