EDIFIER S550

Well, after getting a set of these in at OcUK to look at and after previously owning a set of Z5500s I was very interested to see how well these performed.

The first thing that comes to your attention is the fact that that Subwoofer alone is bigger than the whole Z5500 package and weighs in at an horrendous 29kg! Thats 5 stone give or take

The satellites are built out of wood and resemble high end mini bookshelf speakers making the Z5500 affairs seem cheap in comparison.

The whole package is superior in every way when compared to the Z5500s blowing them clear out of the water for sheer volume and bettering sound quality to a point nearing the precision of the near perfect Aego Ms. The only let down is the fact that the Z5500s have digital connections (optical) which the Edifier are lacking making them only really any good for a home theater if connected direct to an amp although this setup would be leagues away from using a generic set of the logitechs.

Heres a few pics of the unboxed product...

Let me know your thoughts and feel free to ask any questions :)

An extra £100 and with the Z5500 being 5-6 years old they should be better.

With logitechs latest price increases they are actually £30 cheaper..

Those with cheaper stock still have stock at the old cost price so £200 Z5500s wont last much longer making these speakers 10% less and a better speaker. An absolute bargain when you look at what you get for the money :)

One good thing with these, over the Z5500's. If it is indeed true, that the Z5500's convert incoming analogue into digital, then back into analogue, that makes using a sound card based on sound quality, pointless. As these Edifer's are analogue only, the sound card's quality will be utilised. :)

They are absolute boss. A 5.1 system which produces some of the deepest bass's known to man and a fantastic frequency range. I want a pair :D

I wonder if this will force the z-5500's back down in price?

Id like to think so but the only cheap Z5500s on the internet at the moment are old stock. When these go the cost will be high everywhere and Logitech dont seem in any mood to change it. Hopefully this little beauty will shock them into it :)

Looks like logitech need to step up their game. These look fantastic.

I read on here the other day that the Z5500's are being replaced, but what is replacing them?

These really are fantastic! Quality like the Aego M but horrendously powerful making the Z5500s sound weak. Where logitech get their 505w RMS from is anyones guess.

Logitech Z906's will be replacing the Z-5500's planned launch date April 2011.. No specs yet they could be cut down Z-5500's for all we know so far...

Z906s I should imagine will be similar to the Z623 but with all the added bells and whistles of the Z5500. Hopefully they will be priced below the S550 and will sound as good. But its all guess work at the moment as the Z906 are under NDA so no official details are really known about them yet.

Hope not, just checked the Z623's and they look pretty naff to me... I hope they are all new speakers and nothing like the Z623's or I will be keeping the Z-5500's or looking at the S550's or their replacement in the future.

These do look pretty sweet... Now if only I wasn't on a quest for a "perfect" headphone gaming setup these might have had a chance! They look waaaaaayyy better than the "older" Z-5500s that my father has, almost as good looking as separates, I wonder how they'd fair against my Kef setup!?

To be honest they fair reasonably well however I have a mission setup with a KEF sub and it is better but cn you really compare a £300 set of S550s to that sort of system at £1000+?
