Hmmmm lets see Edinburgh in October - dull, grey, cold, very expensive (as always) and a drivers worst nightmare.

Want to see the surrounding countryside ? Better hope for good weather if you want to see any sights and thats getting more of a lottery every day from now on, oh and know where all the speed cameras are.

Turn around and go visit the south of France tbh

Keep to city center and you can't lose, maybe top of lothian road can get a bit rough, grassmarket is a good bet also George street if your more upper market clientele etc, but as long as you don't drift to outside the center you can't really lose, fridays tend to be much better than Saturdays, i've see saturdays when it looks like a ghost town. More english accents in city center than scots!

btw i'm talking about nightlife!

So cutting the slats out of the bumper to make it look like an M5 isnt actually making it look like an M5 then ?

Was just some usefull advice, its a ton of mileage and not something i would want to do in a day, when you can fly which would probably be cheaper and a lot more comfortable, and quicker.

Easily the best roads in the UK along with the best scenery.

Its brilliant up here, especially if you want to go just 'drive'.

As has been mentioned, you may be picking the wrong time for this.

Next week is supposed to be snow here/up there.

If its just Edinburgh you want to see, shouldn't make much difference in all honesty. Wrap up.

What are you on about now? This is a thread about a citybreak not a thread about cars. I didnt cut any slats out of anything.

I don't need advice about putting miles on my car. I would have appreciated the advice had it not been fairly obvious it wasn't your intention, hence the 'replica M5' rubbish. It's a big saloon, i bought it to drive places, driving from end of the country to the other is exactly what it was designed to do. I wouldnt be going from Plymouth anyway I'd be going from Worcester, it's less than 400 miles from there to Edinburgh.

This thread is about whether Edinburgh is a nice place worth visiting. It is not about my car

Whenever i fly to Aberdeen it costs the client £380 return (per person), so i doubt flying will be mega cheap, plus he will need to hire a car, its a stupid idea.

Aberdeen is expensive because the oil workers take up most of the flights, pushing the prices up. You can fly from Glasgow/Edin to pretty much anywhere in England for £100 return or less.

Flying is £136 for two people and one bag with Easyjet, then £70 to hire a Focus for 3 days.

Actually I'm surpised at how cheap that hire car is, to be honest. But still, thats £200 and that buys a lot of fuel.

Indeed that's exactly why I'm in Aberdeen at the moment, Manchester to Glasgow cost me £250 return last month, looks like I need to get a new travel agent.....

Personally I wouldn't fly for this trip, costs aside I've done it both ways countless times and its a really good drive, the motorway / A roads up north are miles better than down south.

my only gripe edinburgh are those tacky tourist shops on the royal mile other then that its a great place to explore and the surrounding area is beautiful

I'd drive it.
If it's the M6 you're taking (haven't checked) then its a nice easy 3 laner.

Edinburgh is my favourite Scottish city, but I would hold off till Christmas if you can, it gets a lot nicer at that time of the year.

Also, if you (or the girl) are fond of shopping Glasgow could be on the cards for a day trip.

Really though, Edinburgh is great get yourself up and enjoy.

Also this, I've been at 3 different times of the year, Middle of summer, Comedy festival time (pricey) and Christmas. Christmas although cold is my favourite time. Got caught up in the castle in a snow blizzard last time I was up there, was Great

I can get a flight for the first week in November from GLA to Manchester for £100.49 return with all taxes and charges. Who did you fly with for that ridiculous price?

Go for driving, I have done Bristol to Edinburgh several times and its no hassle at all. Get onto the motorway, set the cruise control and sit back.

I echo what others have said about activities and George Street, its ok but a lot of arrogant twits who think they are royalty.

Glencoe is stunning at the moment, I was up there last weekend and the scenery is amazing as the trees are changing colour and fresh clear skies.

As far as staying within the UK goes, its quite good. Went there last year for the GF's birthday, enjoyed it but it was so bloody cold that i had to buy a better coat while up there.

Good shout for a UK trip unless you have more of London yet to see. Would i go again, probably not having done it, but it is a box which is now ticked. Hence going abroad for her birthday this year instead.

It certainly sounds like the nicest place in the UK to visit after London. We do London every year, fancied something a bit different this time.

Next decision is whether to go end of November or between Christmas and New Year.

Yeah, i'd definitely put it as the second place i would go after london. Its a fairly safe bet for a UK trip. Not the type of place you'll do twice as its pretty small, but over just a weekend you'll easily fill the time.

The castle is cool, there is a geeky money museum which i liked too.

Weirdly the thing we found hardest was finding decent restaurants, in London you cant move for them, yet Edinburgh we found ourself in Pizza Express one lunch time as we literally couldnt find anywhere decent to eat. Definitely research food places before leaving as this really let our trip down.
