EE have arranged for an Openreach engineer to attend, is this actually needed?

Hi there,

I've switched over to EE Fibre 67, from their 5G mobile home broadband. They have arranged for an Openreach engineer to come out to my property next Friday, to do some kind of installation. The thing is, I live in a block of flats, and we can't get full fibre/FTTP here, it's just the 67-70Mbps capped broadband, it's fibre to the exchange, then copper to my flat.

I've had similar broadband packages in the past with TalkTalk and Sky, at the same address, but they didn't need anyone to come out to the property, they just sent the router to me, I plugged it into the phone line in my flat, and it was all working fine.

So I just don't understand the need for an engineer to come out and 'install' anything, as far as I'm aware, there's nothing to install here. The router should be arriving on Monday, can I just plug it in myself when it arrives, and I'll get a connection?

The last fixed broadband connection we had was with Sky (via the wall socket), and that was only just over a year ago (January 2024) that I switched from that to the mobile broadband connection, so it's not like the socket has been out of use for a long time.

Theres every chance that it has been physically disconnected in the cabinet or communal panel in the block to install someone else, which would require the technician to reconnect the pair in the cab and then verify the line is working in the property. This costs the ISP money, they generally don’t book people to come out for fun.

they could be running a fiber cable to your house. this happed the last time i switched providers
Does this mean I can get full fibre, if they do that?

That would be awesome, as I've been wanting full fibre for years, but I can't see it, as my flat is on a main road, and I think the cabinet is across the road for our flats (though I am in a ground floor flat). So would that not mean digging up the main road etc?
 
Openreach has fibre overhead rather than underground these days. I have FTTP and it comes from a pole over the street :)

yer, when i moved into a new build i spent 5 years with 0.5meg until EE offered me 100meg, they came and put fiber to the house.

i could only get basic internet for 5 year until open reach expanded the expanded the box thing(lol)
they have been rolling this out for a few years now, look's like its your turn

Avalon provided the correct answer in the first reply. If your FTTC has been ceased for a while then it's possible that your line has been unpatched from the port, the engineer appointment is to connect it up again and then check inside your property that it was the correct line.

It won't be to install FTTP, you can't get FTTP unless the checker says you can.

Not sure about all blocks of flats
But in my case
Openreach ran all the fttp at one time
Ran it to the wall outside every flat regardless of
Whether the current resident would actually want fttp
Which does make better sense than doing
Them individually
So if they do that sort of thing it's hard not
To notice them doing it
Even though checker said I couldn't get fttp
The engineers running it all over the property told
A different story to my eyes

I know that you write like this to help with text parsing but in this case this comes out like an ancient proverb.
 
BT are generally "forcibly" switching whole exchanges to FTTP only. Even customers on some old fttc package will be getting new routers they MUST plug their landline phone into to continue to have basic telephony. Not QUITE sure what's occurring with customers only on BT phone.
