Eggs still safe to eat?

I have some eggs i bought yesterday that have a use by date of 23rd December. My housemate has some that have a use by date of 19th October

Tested one of each and they both sink. Does this mean his can be eaten still?

Surely as long as the shell isn't broken they can't go off? (like a puncture in tinned food turns it bad)

They're fine. If you put them in and they stand on their end (but are still sunken) then you should eat them soon as they're due for going off (it's a built-up of gas which causes them to float and go off).

I've always used the water test even with fresh eggs. Never failed me yet :D.

Stop egging him on to eat potentially unsafe food guys. However they say you cannot make an omelet without breaking eggs :D **awaits flaming**

It'll be fine. It'll be rubbish for poaching but as long as it doesn't smell bad then it'll be fine. Even gone off egg is unlikely to make you unwell other than feeling sick because it tastes bad.

You banned him because you got butthurt?

Eggstraordinary!

The yolk sinks

Only just read this thread, had I read it sooner I'd have been thinking about it and sniggering up and down the motorway :p

Best Before means just that. They are at their best before that date but perfectly safe after that date as long as you do the water test.

I ate 2 cream cakes 2 days past their Use By date this week and they were very nice. It is Use By stuff that you are not meant to eat after the Use By date.

Sell By means **** all. It's just for shops.
